Don't specifically blame Asia. It's like this for animals everywhere. Whether it's an exotic pet store, or someones backyard. If there are holes in a countries' laws to do things like this, bad people will take the opportunity... just like in my country, big cats are sold to just about anyone with a permit, even if the living conditions are not ideal. |

I agree with Collar. Asia isn't the only place where animals are "living" like this. It happens all over the globe. Hopefully someday, this place and others like this will be shut down and animals will be released, though right now I don't see a bright future for some of them. |

I didn't mean to insult Asia in general, or to suggest that all of the continent is like this (which would be foolish, as judging an entire population based on certain aspects always is), I'm just saying I've been hearing a lot of negativity regarding animal treatment there. Yes, it happens all over the globe, but more so in some places than others.

I did some research and according to some articles, Japan is actually big on the exotic pet trade, closely followed by the United States and Germany. So you're actually right, Cyborg. ![]() Though it is still illegal there, as smuggling exotic animals should be. I'm just trying to clarify that Asia isn't the only place that should be accessed. Every country needs better laws over animal rights, hopefully that happens someday... its too sad to see people picking up exotic animals instead of the ones that are meant to be loved as pets. |

Definitely. I've seen on the Internet some even worse shops. There's one in Russia (forgot the source) where rhesus macaques were housed in small, cramped glass boxes, and even lammergeier and other birds of prey for sale. And in Shanghai, street vendors were keeping budgies, cockatiels and conures in cramped boxes, to a point if I was a bird I'd flip out in claustrophobia. Tons of baby turtles were stuffed in those netting bags usually used for oranges, and they're literally climbing on one another. And at a nearby local flea market, the animals there were housed in poor conditions, yet they haven't closed down yet either. The owner is crap, and one of my friends visited there once and got crap as well. I visited the place YEEARS ago, it was smelly. Our species stinks. |

I think the keyword here is sympathy. it's something that people who abuse animals lack. They don't understand that animals have desires. Exotic pet owners cannot possibly match what wild animals get from living free in the wild. Anyways, I wouldn't say people fail as a species, as it's quite amazing what humans will do for animals when we really do care... |

Yes, humans CAN do good when they want to, but they are also the only species capable of committing atrocities like this. |

Old, but I thought I'd share it. This is worse than them being sold as pets: being sold as something that hangs of your necklace, key or bag. |

While that isn't much better, at least the animals are dead by the time they're sold so they don't have to endure a life of suffering and torment like they would as pets. |

Both being sold as pets and being killed will make animals miserable. Not to mention there are lots of things to hang from your necklace besides animals. |
