So now it's time for some new intriging questions in our monthly poll, for challenging contests to participate in, and for getting to know some people better through revealing interviews.
But above all, it's time to sit back and relax while reading our amazing newsletter.

There are no big events planned in the near future, but that doesn't mean nothing is happening on our beloved site.
Two amazing contest are running at the moment. Make sure to check them out, and even participate in one of them. (Or both)

Now we've had you messing around with small exhibits for reptilians and with big indoor ecosystems for larger animals. It's time to combine your skills into one complex with different small exhibits. Let's take the plunge into the deep and surround us with the splendor of the underwater world. It is up to you to let us experience the wonders of the watery world in the ultimate Zoo Tycoon aquarium.

Posted Image

For ages, we've had you building and perfecting your photography skills in Zoo Tycoon 2, but what about if you transfer those skills over to real zoos? That's right, this contest is all about the perfect shot on one of your trips to the zoo!

For this month we have two all new features.

The first one you can find in our well known pointies shop. A new silhouette pack has been released, EQUIDS, containing a kiang and plains zebra, and the very rare Przewalski's horse. But don't worry if you don't have enough pointies yet. Although one of them is a rare wild horse, these horses are going to stay in our shop forever.

Our second new feature is related to the problems with the displaying of our Achievements Zoo a while back. And although these problems are now completely solved, we still decided to do something about it, just in case anything like that happens again. But this new feature is also usefull for people with a slower internetconnection, were it takes a long time to load all the images of the Achievement Zoo's. From now on, you can decide for yourself if you want the Achievement Zoo's displayed or not. You can do that by disabling them in your profile. Just go to Your profile ---> Code settings: [Code CP]

[anchor]spotlight[/anchor]Posted ImageInterviewed by: Orca Freak

This month, we chose for a well known member of the ZT2 - Community, and one of the founders of our beloved TRT.
I had the privilege to interview none other than Zebrasorus, and the opportunity to give her a well-deserved place in the spotlight.

1. When and how did you first become involved in the ZT community?

I actually found my way to the community by watching YouTube videos, when one of them brought me to Zoo Tycoon Volcano. I wasn't active yet, but that was the first site I joined. However, it wasn't until I joined Tesara in March, 2011 that I became anything more than a lurker.

At the time, things like designing and zoo-building seemed way over my head, so I started something a bit more humble. It was then I started creating art in PowerPoint, due to not owning a program like Photoshop. Interestingly, the style caught on in the community and now several talented people use PowerPoint to make art, which I think is pretty cool. From there I eventually moved to Northern Skies and began to try new things, such as designing.

2. When did you start designing and what was your first project?

My first project was making a placable ambient horse, actually. It seems pretty silly now, but I think I may have been a more adventurous coder then than I am now! I didn't release the project, but it was pretty fun to make. It wasn't really until later when I learned to mesh that my designs were anything really original, which I definitely owe to Okapi Rainforest who first taught me to mesh, but also to the many people (Jimmy, Jasper, Danny, Fireplume) who have encouraged and inspired me to design in my couple of years in the community.

3. How has the community changed you as a person? Have you allowed it to?

This may be the most amazing part of my experience in the community. I joined it as a shy, rather insecure, lonely girl. At the time I had been bullied a lot at school, and thankfully that never happened to me in the community, so I stuck around, but as I've been here for almost three years, things did change, and I let them, mostly because I didn't even realize they were happening until it was too late.

I'm happy to say I've only been changed for the better. Helping create TRT and running it successfully for several months has given me not only confidence, but a realization that leadership is another ability I never knew I possessed. Being shy in real life, it was rare that I took charge of everything, but I've come to realize that when I have a vision, and some wonderful people beside me, it can be done. Beyond this, the community has essentially given me a new career path. I went from wanting to be an artist or musician to pursuing a career in architecture. (I'm going to build zoos in real life!)

Designing also influenced me quite a lot. Especially in recent months as I've been designing quite a lot, I've started telling myself that anything is possible. Perhaps it sounds cliche, but something so simple can have a great impact on one's life. Anything is possible. I didn't think starting a successful forum would be possible, or becoming a good designer, yet it seems both have happened. No matter who you are, nothing is impossible if you put your mind and your heart into it.

4. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose to live?

Australia! I'm hoping to study there in college, actually, to see if it's the place for me, but it seems pretty nice from what I've seen (and it's not the United States, so there's more in it's favor).

5. What are your favorite animals?

To be honest, this usually changes if I get a new set, but currently I like the blue-crested lizard, but I've always had a particular love for ocean life.

6. When did you develop your love for animals?

To be honest, when I first joined this community, I didn't have any particular love for animals (sure I liked them, but it was just the "normal" amount), so it really only changed once I became a part of the forums. Now I do love most animals and learning more about them.

7. What do you want to be when you grow up?

Well I accidentally answered this one already, but an architect is my current dream. It's like math and art combined to make a huge masterpiece people walk in! That sounds fun to me. If that doesn't work out, I'd like to pursue a career in 3D animation, and keep painting and music as hobbies of mine.

8. Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Night owl, for sure. I detest mornings with a passion, but this is probably due to my friends in this community that keep me up past midnight chatting.

9. Want to share any sneak peaks of anything?

Well, unfortunately I'm only just beginning this project, but I have something really big planned, and I'm so excited to work on it. People may have noticed it's been a few days since I updated my projects thread, but that's because of this project; I'd like to have more done before I show anything officially, but I suppose a sneak peak of what's to come can't hurt.

Posted Image

It's no elevated path. That's all I have to say for now. ;)

Thank you very much, Zebrasorus.
And we'll definitly keep an eye on your Project Thread.

The first month of the new year lies now behind us. It has been a quiet month here on TRT. But that doesn't mean nothing happened.

Posted Image

We had a quick and funny contest in which a lot of members participated: "House of the Herps". The task was simple: Build a vivarium for some kind of small reptile or amphibian. And although this contest already ended, a lot more are still running. Lets see if we are going to have so many participants for these.

Posted Image

And it's not because we had a quiet month, that it also applies to the rest of the community. At ZooHispania: The S.O.S. Festival is back with new downloads and contests. Another great contest is the Australian fauna designing contest. Where you have to design - like the title says - an Australian animal. Who's up for these challenges? Make sure to check it all out: ZooHispania.

Posted Image

Gaia has been undergoing some changes in the last few weeks aswell. They completely updated their Designing Center and Zoo Building Center. And the voting for the Indoor Enclosure Contest is still running. So if you haven't decided on your favourite yet, make sure you do: Gaia.

Well, as said before, it's been a month to relax after the hollidays. Next month we'll be back with - hopefully - more news.

There are currently two main populations of Japanese crane; one is resident to the Island of Hokkaido in northern Japan and does not migrate. The second population breeds in north-eastern China, Russia and Mongolia and migrates to eastern China, and North and South Korea where it spends the winter.

General:

The Japanese crane, also called the red-crowned crane, is a large east Asian crane and among the rarest cranes in the world. In some parts of its range, it is known as a symbol of luck, longevity and fidelity.
Adult Japanese cranes are named for a patch of red bare skin on the crown, which becomes brighter in the mating season. Overall, they are snow white in color with black on the wing secondaries, which can appear almost like a black tail when the birds are standing, but the real tail feathers are actually white. Males are black on the cheeks, throat and neck, while females are pearly gray in these spots. The bill is olive green to greenish horn, the legs are slaty to grayish black, and the iris is dark brown.
Adults usually pair for life and these bonds are reinforced in a mesmerising synchronised courtship dance. Japanese cranes arrive in the coastal marshes in the spring to breed, and nests are made in areas of dead reeds between 30 and 200 centimetres tall. A clutch will normally contain two eggs, which hatch after a 29 to 34 day incubation period. The chicks then leave the nest after only a couple of days to follow their parents on foraging trips; only one chick is likely to be reared successfully by each pair.

Habitat:

Japanese cranes are highly aquatic birds. They feed in much deeper water than other crane species; feeding on pasture lands in summer and moving to coastal saltmarsh, rice paddies, cultivated fields, rivers and freshwater marshes in winter.

Diet:

Japanese cranes forage using a 'walk and peck' technique. They have a broad diet that varies depending on the site, including insects, aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, rodents, fish, reeds, grasses, and other plants.

Threats:

These beautiful birds were almost hunted to extinction in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century for their stunning plumage. Habitat losses due to agriculture and development have been further causes of the decline in the Japanese crane. Wetlands are fragile ecosystems and both the wintering and breeding grounds are under increasing risk of degradation and loss due to conversion to agriculture and industrial development.
A number of international agreements have been made to protect crane species and their habitats, and it is illegal to hunt Japanese cranes in all countries in which they occur. Protected areas have been established to safeguard the species; furthermore, conservation and educational programmes have been developed with the involvement of local communities, and a number of reintroduction attempts have been made.

Weight & Length:

This species is among the largest cranes, typically measuring about 150 to 158 cm tall and 120–150 cm in length (from bill to tail tip). Across the large wingspan, the red-crowned crane measures 220–250 cm. Typical body weight can range from 7 to 10.5 kg, with males being slightly larger and heavier than females and weight ranging higher just prior to migration. On average, it is the heaviest crane species, although both the Sarus and Wattled Crane can grow taller and exceed this species in linear measurements.

Zoo Guidelines:

Although rather rare in captivity, Japanese cranes do quite well in a typical crane exhibit. Although it would be a lot better if the area contains a large amount of grassy wetlands and marches. You can easily keep them together with other waterfowl that share a similar habitat.
If you want this beautiful birds to breed and reproduce, make sure they have a secure hideout with high dead reeds and grasses to build their nest. But due to their complex mating rituals, breeding in captivity doesn't occur very often.

[anchor]questions[/anchor]Posted ImageInterviewed by: Orchid

Hello! This is your reporter orchid, who is interviewing people this time. I hope you are enjoying the newsletter with popcorn and orange juice. This month we have interviewed some awesome members, among whom is also my best friend! We will get to know what they think about the forum, and we will get to know them better. Those three 'golden ones' are JurassicMT, Robbie and our awesome Zoocrazy!

Nature:

1) Suppose you have a cryptid animal. What will it be like?

I don't think i would like to have any kind of cryptid. They are usually scary looking and dangerous "animals" xD Except you consider the thylacine as a cryptid (since there has been sightings after their extinction). In that case i would have thylacine :) ~ Zoocrazy

My imagination is very intense, so this creature would have features of many animals togather. :D
It has the ability to fly and swim. It has the colors of a okapi but has a much larger neck and ram like horns it has hollow bones so it can fly using it's wings and it has some fur and has lion paws, yes it's very weird. xD ~ Robbie

Um.... A large bird with serpentine body with four wings. ~ JurassicMT

2) If you had the chance to grow a botanical garden, which tree would be your favorite?

I love foliage it's very beautiful, but I usually like, medium sized and colorful trees. ~ Robbie

I think.... Many kind of palm trees, tropical flowers such as orchids, bird of paradises, hibiscus flowers, etc. ~ JurassicMT

Well i don't know much about plants, but if i have to choose a tree it would have to be a large, tall tree, with a lot of big branches and a wide trunk. Some kind of tree that gives you shadow and is good to climb it and sit in its branches. Maybe an ombú then? ~ Zoocrazy

3) What is your favorite zoo and why?

My favorite zoo so far is Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo, a local zoo in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. I love this zoo because it's very big, holding a lot of animal species and can't be found normally in other zoos here. The animals are also kept in the very good condition and there are also many activities to do such as night safari, animal shows, etc. ~ JurassicMT.

I like whipsnade zoo, because it has a variety of animals and takes zoo keeping to the next level. ~ Robbie

Haven't been to many zoos and any of the zoos i have visited are my favorite. They were all really awful. ~ Zoocrazy

Personal:

1) What do you want to become, when you grow up?

Well i kind of grow up already xD I'm finishing my studies in medicine and i want to be a pediatritian, so i will apply for the pediatric residency soon :) ~ Zoocrazy

I would like to become a zoologist or a game keeper, both something I always wanted to do, because I find them interesting. ~ Robbie.

I want to be a exotic animal/zoo vet, and maybe open native wild animals rehab too. ~ JurassicMT

2) How did you spend your Christmas 2013?

Unfortunately for me, my exam was in the same time of Christmas ceremony! So, during Christmas, I stayed at home, read the book and studied. However, we ordered pizza for Chistmas's dinner however. ~ JurassicMT

Same as usual. With my family at my uncles house. ~ Zoocrazy

had really so much fun ! I had spent time at the round table playing with others it was the best thing about this Christmas ! And Iwent to my cousins houses and stuffed my self with food. ~ Robbie

3) What is your favourite food?

For main dish, I prepfer curry, Spicy fried/grilled chicken, steak, cheese. For dessert, cheesecake, cheese pie, fruit jello and vanilla ice-cream. ~ JurassicMT

I have a lot of favorite kinds of food, most of them argentian dishes, but one thing i absolutly love and i can't live without it is the chocolate. ~ Zoocrazy

I love lots of food like, chips and fast food but most of all I love pizza! ~ Robbie

Community:

1) How would you feel when the community will be rendered inactive after a long time?

I feel bored, yeah. When there are no friends to enjoy with... ~ JurassicMT

I don't think this will happen, but if it does, probably future generations start interest in the game. So even if it ever is inactive, it will be revived. ~ Robbie

Well i guess is something that will happend at some point. I guess i'll just left the forums if they become inactive. I think i will miss some people overall and the lack of a place to show my zoos, but is not like it is something that will define my life to be honest xD ~ Zoocrazy

2) Are you still a download seeker, or you have fun in the place?

I stopped being a download seeker for very long time and now being an active member. One factor is I don't play ZT2 much around this time, but I still follow some desginer showing their project though. ~ JurassicMT

I am both, I have so much fun here and talk to you guys, but I also am a download seeker because of all the lovely downloads! ~ Robbie

I enjoy the downloads as any other member, but i've discovered a lot of most important things in the community since i become active. I just enjoy being around the forum, showing my zoos, my drawings, talking with community friends, helping others and being staff of TRT. ~ Zoocrazy

3) Are you satisfied with your position in the forum?

Very satisfied! I enjoy being as popular as myself now. I don't feel that I want to be an admin or moderator or something like that. ~ JurassicMT.

Yes, pretty much even if it gets tiresome at times. But i like being staff here and being able to help members and work along with my fellow staff members to keep this forum fun, active and friendly. ~ Zoocrazy

I am perfectly fine with my position and always will be, because this forum is very friendly.
And I love it. ~ Robbie

Thanks to you three for giving your interviews. I hope you enjoyed being interviewed! Enjoy the other parts of the Newsletter! Until next time, tata Bye-bye!

Here are the answers to the riddles of the previous Newsletter:

1. None. Pear trees don't bear plums.
2. A splinter
3. A snail
4. A letter. I didn’t ask which one.
5. Tomorrow

Congratulations Okeanos, Zoocrazy, Orchid, fridooh and Mastodon28 for finding all answers.

Lets have another try with the next five. Do you think you know the answer, make a topic in the Staff PM Box with the Title: "Newsletter 9 - Riddles: Your username". You never know, you might get something in return.

1. They come out at night without being called, and are lost in the day without being stolen.
What are they?

2. With pointed fangs I sit and wait,
with piercing force I serve out fate.
Grabbing bloodless victims, proclaiming my might,
physically joining with a singel bite.
What am I?

3. A house has four walls. All of the walls are facing south, and a bear is circling the house.
What color is the bear?

4. If you break me, I do not stop working. If you touch me, I may be snared. If you lose me, nothing will matter. What am I?

5. Take away my first letter, and I still sound the same.
Take away my last letter, and I still sound the same.
Take away my middle letter, and I still sound the same.
I am a five letter word.
Which?

Artistically with Art

Friedrich Nietzsche once said:

"The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude."

Here at TRT, we have a marvellous section, called: 'The Art Section'. I think everyone knows it, and even took a look at it. We have a large group of very divers artists in our community. Some are good with words or pencils, others use a camera or a computer program. And some of our artists are even prepared to make some art personally for you. But all of them share a love for art. And all of them are prepared to share their work, their love for art with you.

But have you ever given a nice comment on an artists work? Have you showed your gratitude for their efforts? For the time and patience they need to make you that awsome banner or avatar?

Well, for this months Community Challange, I would like you to visit the Art Section, and go through it with your eyes wide open. Try to imagine the time it took to make that awsome picture, or the patience that is required for waiting for that right moment to take the perfect photograph. And then tell the artist how good they did, how perfect that shot is, how amazing it is what they can do with a pencil or a computer. Show them how much you appreciated it they share that awsome talent with you. And maybe, why not start a topic yourself, show us what you can do.

Interested in helping out the forum? Well there are several things you can do to help us out!

1. Join the Newsletter Team! All the above posts were written this month, and next month you could be one of the writers! Pm the Newsletter Manager and let him/her know that you would like to help.
2. Report stuff. If you see something that is against the site rules, then just click that little report button so that we can see it ASAP. We can't be everywhere at once, so the sooner you let us know about it the better
3. Assist. If you see someone who needs help, has a question, or isn't following the rules, kindly help them out if you can. Often times a staff will still follow up behind you, but we always appreciate seeing members helping each other out.
4. Be active. The more you post, and make topics, the more others can post and that will open more doors for you to post!
5. Be friendly. PM people, welcome people, and be patient with everyone, especially newer members. Remember, if you're kind to people, its very likely they'll be kind to you
6. Submit Downloads. We have a nice download center so we mine as well get as many downloads as we can in it. We also have good download managers, so we had mine as well keep them busy too
7. Offer your help in the Staff PM Box. Let us know if you are available and we may just have something for you that would take a lot of pressure off of us.
