Our old aquarium was decimated overnight by a 3 inch crayfish I dumped in when I was younger. He killed eleven fish in about six hours. Two gouramis, a few platies, and a lot of neon tetras. Only a couple were alive by morning, all the others had been killed with bleeding slits on their bellies and each had a little nibble taken from it. But if your pet store says it's safe, maybe your blue crayfish is different.I would think they're all alike though. Stores usually say whatever you want to hear to sell you something. I hope you cycled the aquarium before adding those tetras. |

That clearly wasn't a planned arrangement, so it's no surprise he ended up killing your fish. Platy's and Neon Tetra's are bottom-swimmers and therefore shouldn't be paired with a crayfish. My Red-Eyed Tetras are middle to top-tank swimmers, so they're more likely to be safe. As for stores saying whatever you want to hear - I got my information from multiple internet sources, a friend with experience keeping crayfish, as well as the pet store, and they all said the same thing. Considering your experience with crayfish wasn't a planned pairing with compatible species, but rather an accidental 'dumping' of the crayfish into a tank that wasn't meant for it when you were a kid, I wouldn't say that's a very accurate source of judgement. I'm also fairly sure that the employees at the fish store are more qualified to make that judgement than you are, considering they specialize in fish care. Just because someone's advice is different than yours and differs from your own experience, doesn't mean they're lying. It's a pet-peeve of mine when people automatically assume that anyone who's working in a business is untrustworthy - that's a very negative and untrue outlook, and only serves to spread distrust in a community. There's some people who are in it only for the money, yes - but the majority aren't. It's nice that you hope I cycled the aquarium. You can hope whatever you like. but one thing's for sure - you can count on the fact that I always do my research when it comes to live critters, and would never disregard their needs if they're ever put into my care. If I did, I wouldn't be a veterinary technician.

Platies are top-dwellers. You can tell by their upturned mouths. C: |

I must've misread the article then. All I know is they aren't one of the species compatible with crayfish, but there's plenty that are. It just goes to show how weak your argument is if that's the only thing you picked out of my post to respond to. The next time you have something to say, make sure you can back it up. I managed to keep Louisiana crayfish with mosquitofish twice without accidents. However I got the crayfish when it was less than an inch long, and kept it until it was about 2 inches long. Also I tried to keep it well fed everytime. Sheather might be right about pet shops employees: some are good guys willing to help, but others will only try to make money out of you. It depends on you if trustingthem or not. |

You're right, some are good, some are bad. I just don't like when people automatically assume they're the bad guys instead of the other way around. I prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt and simply be cautious, getting my info from multiple sources instead of trusting any one person in particular. ![]() That's good to hear though. I admit I'm a little worried for my tetras, but I'll do my best to keep my crayfish well-fed like you, plus ensure he doesn't have any tall plants that can support his weight, because I've read that some crays like to climb them and go 'surface hunting'. But, he shouldn't be able to do that, and once they learn there's a threat at the bottom of the tank, I'm sure the tetra will start avoiding it more. I would assume they're smart enough to do that, otherwise they wouldn't survive in the wild. Oh also, what sized tank did you have Furka? Was there a good amount of space between the bottom and surface for your fish to stay safe? Just curious, because mine has quite a lot of room, and if it's more than you had then it would be even safer and possibly ease my mind a bit.

Thanks Zoocrazy! I didn't either until about five or six days ago. Now i'm getting all sorts of educated. It's fun learning about new stuff, especially something as intricate and rewarding as aquarium-keeping.

Can't remember the exact size but it was smaller than my current 35 litres. And it was basically empty, no substrate (I was a newbie back then) and just two low fake plants, the crayfish hid under the filter. |

Ohh, so you had less than a ten-gallon tank. Mine is 29 gallons, so hopefully my fish will be just fine.

Aquarium Video Bubbles! I added a bubble stone and might add another one to the back of the tank later. Right now it's on a low setting. I'll probably keep it set to that permanently once I get my crayfish, and just turn it up now and again to make sure the water is properly aerated. |
