and still trying to survive, don't worry. I hate their guts too. They have killed 8 of my out-door cats before and have even killed a Yorkie we used to have. They also have nearly killed all of our free-range Lion-head rabbits and are still killing them! Now they are very useless unless you have a rabbit or cat infestation then they are useful! Heck, they don't even help with the deer over-population in Indiana.
Natural selection doesn't allow for "useless" animals. Even the vermin have a role to play in the larger ecosystem. It might not be one you understand, as I can safely assume you're not a PhD-holding Ecologist, but it exists. If people don't want their cats and dogs to be eaten by coyotes, they need to take proper precautions, i.e. not allowing their pets outside unsupervised and unsecured. That goes doubly for "free-range" rabbits.

Being a responsible pet owner and analyzing the steps you're taking to prevent your pets and livestock from becoming a snack for a hungry coyote (or whichever other predator happens to be annoying ranchers on any given day) is step 1. Unfortunately, most people tend to ignore their own short-comings and mistakes in lieu of picking an easier, external target to blame their misfortunes on.

In terms of ranching, and losing calves to coyotes (or wolves, or mountain lions, etc), that's the unfortunate "cost of doing business" when you're grazing your livestock on land that is part of other, native animals' territory, hunting range, etc.

I don't have a problem with human beings stepping in and becoming a part of the food chain/cycle of life/whatever. We've upset the natural balance so much that we sort have a responsibility to course-correct every so often.

That does not, however, mean that anyone should treat the culling of wild animals as a bloodsport. Treat the animals you kill; for food, for predator management, etc., with the respect they deserve and the act itself with the gravity it deserves. People who revel in "exterminating" a species because it annoys or fightens them are irrational, callous, and--frankly--dangerous to other human beings.

You're not proving how much of a "tough guy" you are by casually mentioning how many "critter Xs" you've killed, or will kill, or have hung on your wall. You're proving how much of a sociopath you are. End of story.

Oh my, I killed a mouse. Hurry! The world must be ending. I never said I killed a coyote. Just how much I don't care how or why they are being killed does not make me a sociopath. and how about you do some god damn research while we are at it?
http://entertainmentguide.local.com/rules-hunting-coyotes-indiana-4683.html
We also trap foxes and bears, yet I don't see any of you whining about how they are "tortured" by a foot trap and what about mice? we trap them in traps when they break into our homes do we not? I don't care if I so called "offended" you by harming your f***ing beloved animals. Where did I state I was killing coyotes? Oh right! There isn't a place because I didn't.
May I make a suggestion to the staff to move this to the argument section?

That's not a literal "you," Konner. It's representative of people in a general sense, particularly people who blithely slaughter animals because they get a thrill out of it while hiding behind the "It's animal management!" argument.

But please, continue flying off the handle like a crazy person. That's really helping your "argument."

For the record, I don't kill bears, or wolves, or even mice. The only animals I'm responsible for killing are animals that I eat, and I happen to purchase all of my meat from LOCAL farmers who humanely slaughter their animals, who spent their lives eating actual grass in an actual field. I don't push my lifestyle choices on other people, because it isn't an option for everyone, but it is for ME, and I can only be responsible for myself and what I consume. But, since you brought it up, I thought I'd clarify what I and do not kill, and for what reasons I do kill.

I know Peta is crazy. The only good thing they have done is sue Bear Gyrlls and Ringling Bros Circus. You know what we need? Not PETA, or Pefa which is also known as Pathetic Endings For Animals, but support from the general public who unfortunately doesn't care.

Look what I put in bold. This is where I stopped respecting your opinion on coyotes and any species in particular, really. Cats are incredibly destructive to the environment and should be kept indoors. Anyone who lets them roam free, basically gives them a free pass to murder any bird they can catch. And cats are excellent bird hunters, effectively decimating populations of various species. Well done.

As much as I love cats, when it comes to those kept outdoors, I'm rooting for coyotes.

Cats eradicated a whole bird species. Coyotes eat all those outdoor DOMESTIC cats so they don't eradicate species.

Yet I'm sure none of you have even seen a coyote in the wild before. Maybe you should rethink that statement as let's see, Cats kill Mice which are a transmitter of some very nasty human
diseases. Oh, and what about coyotes attacking humans? I know it is rare and all but they do, my dad had to "exterminate" one running at him with it's jaws wide open and got a foot from him before it was "exterminated". Oh I give up, no matter how much I tell you coyotes are a huge nuisance and cats kill mice you won't believe me on either statement.

Whilst that is kinda true, I think you would be pretty annoyed if you got home one day and some coyote had eaten all your pets.

Well, Coyotes eat cats thing won't happen if you keep eyes on your cat or other pets when they are outside the house. if you can't or don't have time to do that, you should not have that certain kind of pet at the first place. You must blend with the environment you live in, not change the environment to suit your life. Actually we have changed the environment too much already. Coyotes in fact won't be that many if people didn't destroy forest in the past or eliminate wolves, coyote's main population controler. However, that was the past and it is hard to fix right now, so let not disturb the nature more... This is just my opinnion though...

Another example. When I and my family were living in the country side. We have outdoor guppy pool which was prone to get attacked by herons. We had lost several beautiful males to the birds until we decided to put the net up and cover the the pool. We didn't have problem with herons anymore and we didn't have shoot down every herons we see as well.

But! If the coyotes around you resident become too aggressive, too confident and attack kids or pets even in front of owners and do it very often. Then, you are in serious situation and have no more options other than destroy "some" of them and hope for the rest to start to fear humans again. We don't want them to become extinct, right?

That's why I don't leave my pets outside. Even my Cattledog, who is part Dingo, isn't left outside to fend for herself. The GSD next door isn't left out by himself, and he's as big as a goddamn pony (and an idiot/goofball, but that's beside the point). Many of my friends have pitbulls, and guess what? They don't get left outside either. So unless coyotes are actively breaking into your house and ransacking the place, I don't see why anyone should be frothing at the mouth over "eradicating" them.

Cull the population to keep it in check? Absolutely, as that's a necessity in areas where humans have upset the natural balance between predator v. predator and predator v. prey. That doesn't make us "bad," it just puts an additional responsibility on us to pay attention to what is going on as we bulldoze and pave over what was once wild territory. But people who giddily espouse the extermination of a species because they left their fucking rabbits outside, unattended, and apparently unsecured and came home to find them eaten, well too goddamn bad, buckaroo. Be a responsible pet owner and lock that shit up.

And @ Konner: I have seen coyotes, they're everywhere in the continental US, because they're very, very good at living alongside human beings (they eat our trash, pets, livestock, etc., remember?). I hear them singing almost every night before bed and the noise makes my dogs go nuts. I don't have problems with them because (a) I don't leave small lagomorphs outside to tempt wild predators into coming onto my property and eating my "pets," (b) I don't take my dogs anywhere unleashed, and I don't leave them alone outside. Ever. And (c) my cat is an "indoor" cat, as all PET cats ought to be. As others have already pointed out, domestic/feral cats can decimate wild bird populations (and endemic rodents, small reptiles, amphibians, etc., as they've done elsewhere). If I owned a pitbull and let it roam loose in my neighborhood because he's "an outdoor dog" I'd be charged with a crime.

Keep your pets INSIDE, where coyotes won't reach them. Problem solved.

Please be mindful of your lanuage MI, there are some who will find it offensive. Thank you.

I'm not slow! That's just my moe!

mouse traps are different, they kill instantly (or at least the common kinds of traps do)

in many areas coyote are pests, they are overpopulated, and so long as they are killed/culled relatively humanely (shooting) its fine

but don't blame them for killing your outdoor pets, if you want to have bunny farms or outdoor cats than move somewhere without coyotes first, or put up fence (not a 100% solution but it would help) or best yet, keep them inside

cats can be kept outdoors if you put a bell on them, not only does it keep them from killing animals, it helps you find them

so what if cats kill mice, you know what kills FAR MORE mice, coyotes

I haven't seen coyotes up close - they're not in the zoo anywhere around here and I live in Europe, as you might have noticed. Here, foxes are huge problem for me because they'd wipe out my hens if they had a chance to get to them. Same goes for martens. By day they can't because it's a bit loud where I live and they fear humans. By night my hen house is secure from foxes and martens and they can't get in. I don't hate them, even if they are nuisance to me and even if foxes can transmit rabies. It's just nature. I don't let my pets loose on the neighbourhood and I try to keep the wild animals away from them. The only direct interaction with wild animals i get are collared doves stealing grains from my hens so I often have to scare them away (and they come back - I still don't want them exterminated), magpies can steal my chicks, cats can kill my chicks. Speaking of cats again. if I saw a cat in my hens' pen, I wouldn't hesitate to capture it and send to the shelter so it no longer poses a threat to my property. Irresponsible owners should be punished.
