In Zoos

Type of Exhibit:

A large circular grassy exhibit, with a channel surrounding it (or surrounding half of it, while the other half is surrounded by a high rocky fence). At the side of the channel which is close to the viewing area, it is necessary to install electric wires to prevent escapes. In addtion, it is not necessary to fill the channel with water. Within the exhibit, medium-high rock patches with large palm trees and ferns scattered around the exhibit are good. It is also good to build large entertainment structures, including swings, hammocks, ropes, bridges, and ladders. These enrichment structures should also be hanged between the rock patches. A small shallow pool is good as well. The shelter should be built as a rocky cave with ropes, hammocks and ladders, but without foliage. The wall surrounding the exhibit should be with rocky cover and everal electric wires on top of it. the exhibit itself should be a mild sloped surface.

Temperament: Like other primates, Orangutans can be potentially be dangerous, but but much less agressive than Gorillas and Chimpanzees. Their attitude towards humans is, perhaps, the friendliest from all apes.

Diet: Most of orangutan's diet is based on fruit. Orangutans favor a fruit called durians. they are also fed on nuts leaves, and even termites.

Social Needs: Orangutans are solitary individuals, that are active during the day.
The mother and offspring, live together for around 7 years. They are arboreal, which means they spend most of the time on trees. Orangutans live between 50 and 60 years in the wild. In zoos, they should consist 1 male, and at least 2 females, and in several parks they are knows to live togather with Gibbons and Siamangs.

Extra Information:
  • Orangutans are the only Great Ape found outside Africa.
  • The name “orangutan” translates into English as “man of the forest”. It comes from Malay and Bahasa Indonesian orang (man) and hutan (forest).
  • It is believed that a male Orangutan is 7 times stronger than male.
  • Orangutans are capable of traveling a kilometer per day
