Type of Exhibit: There are 2 kinds of exhibits recommended for Golden Lion Tamarins:

Make sure to provide a box, a large broken vase or a tree trunk as a shelter. Include a food and water containers along with the Shelter. the ceiling should rather be made of glass, or an opaqued ceiling with Illumination. It is recommended to paint the exhibit's walls with landscape pictures, to provide a natural feeling to the exhibit. The Viewing area should be glass panels.

2) A small open island, surrounded by a shallow moat. It must be shallow enought so that they will not drown, but wide enough to prevent escape. Much like the first type of exhibit, the ground should be mostly dirt, with small rock patches. Plant ferns and medium Tropical plants, but not to big, and connect the foliage with ropes and small logs.

**Because the Golden Lion Tamarin is active only 12 hours (At Maximum), make sure
to provide themn an access to any kind of shelter (Leaf bed, a tree trunk, a box, etc).**

Temperament: Being very small, these Tamarins can rarely do harm, but they are territorial animals. Sometimes, people adopt them as pets (Despite the fact it's illegal). Contact with them should be minimal.

Diet: The Golden Lion Tamarin is an omnivorous, and its diet consists fruits,
flowers, insects and small vertebrates. When providing fruits and/or vegetables, make sure
that they are cut in small pieces, so it'll be easy for them to eat. Treats such as cheese, peanut butter
and honey can be included as well.

Social Needs: A Golden Lion Tamarins family, typically consist 2-8 members. In zoos,
It's enought to have 4 members (1~4 Females and 1-2 Males). If having more than 1 male,
Make sure not to have the same shelter for them togather, to avoid agression. Like any other Primates,
They mark scent within their territory. Golden Lion Tamarins Produce unique sounds, such as "peep" sounds, which are associated with alarm and alliances respectively. "Cluck" sound is made usually during aggressive encounters. "Trill" sound is used to communicate over long distances to give away an individual's position. "Rasp" or "screech" sound is usually associated with playful behavior.

Reproduction: Golden Lion Tamarins will usually not reproduce before the age of 30 Months old (2 and a half years). Reproduction is mostly seasonal and highly depends on rainfall. An offspring will display
adult behaviors from the age of 14 Months. In captivity, a female produces one or sometimes two litters a year.

Extra Information:
  • There are only about 1,500 Golden Lion Tamarins left in the wild. Another 500 live in captivity.
  • Females usually give birth to twins.
  • Golden Lion Tamarins are arboreal Animalsm which means they spend most of their life on trees.
  • Golden Lion Tamarins are named after their mane, which is similar to a lion's mane.
