So this was announced yesterday, I have admit I'm very interested, they're obviously trying to fix up their image that has been tarnished by various films, books, etc... so I'm interested to see you guy's opinion in this. (if there is already a topic for this I couldn't find it XD )

So, does this mean SeaWorld will actually be taken seriously as a zoo?

Definitely not. It's not a zoo, nor will it ever be. It's a marine theme park chain, simple as that. What this WILL do though is start the change of standard for cetacean exhibits. Good.

It's good to see them making change for the better. Guests will probably enjoy it more than the "shamu shows" anyways.

So, with this good news, I'd like to ask: Does anybody here actually like SeaWorld?

I don't have much knowledge of it, other than how it's fallen under criticism for poor treatment of the animals, and that they're changing that.

Are you saying you don't have an opinion on it or?

This is very, very good news. As far as I'm aware, there's no problem in having killer whales participate in shows. The reasons they're so violent towards humans is because of the conditions they've been forced to live in, or for the previously wild ones, they traumatic way they were captured.

I do find a problem with that. I don't think orcas belong in captivity, less alone used for shows. I haven't seen Black Fish nor i plan to do it, but i've read about how bad is for orca's health to be kept in captivity, how much their lifespan is reduced in captivity and how intelligent/social they are that their actual needs can't be fulfill in a captive environment.

Is nice to see SeaWorld making changes for the good. That will certantly improve the Orca's living condition even if they are not the ideal ones.

I agree with this. Killer whales are far too intelligent to be kept in captivity IMO, at least in the conditions that most are currently in. However, that's why I see this a such a huge improvment. As long as the area has enough stimulation, has enough orcas to form a small pod and can provide more than enough room for all of the animals, then I'm hoping things will improve enough for the orcas in captivity. Here's the thing: Killer whales bring in way to much money for them not to be in captivity, and money is what SeaWorld, and other parks like them, care about. No matter what they say, they are business first, zoos second. So I don't think there's a real chance of freeing the orcas into the wild where they truly belong, and that's why I'm hoping that this will provide good enough of an environment for the orcas to live out long and happy lives.

Oh definitely. They do so much good in the world it's ridiculous.
was that sarcasm?
you do realize they spend millions of dollars on marine conservation every year? hire hundreds of personal to work at rescue centers? and form long term career pathways for hundreds of rescue volunteers so they can get jobs doing what they love helping animals?

they fund nearly every rescue on the Florida coast!

in a way it is ridiculous, that they can do so much good outside their parks and have such poor conditions within them
(in regards to orcas, pretty well every other animal receives exemplary care)

nearly every zoo is business first, its to be expected and honestly I don't have a problem with that mindset so long as care is up to par

releasing captive orcas (let alone captive born) is a very bad idea, one that should never happen, it will only cause more problems for wild populations and possibly worse stress for the once captive animals

thats the thing, people always compare SeaWorld to the wild, they never think to compare it to its godforsaken contemporaries, I can assure with 100% certainty every animal at SeaWorld is healthier and Happier than any animal at Marine Land, and don't even get me started on Disney parks treatment of cetaceans

obviously that doesn't mean SeaWorlds condition are good enough, but why is it only they get the bad PR when plenty of other parks ar far worse?

if you are referring to Tilikum, theres a lot more to his story than that, he suffers from mental illness

Blackfish very much tarnished any positive view I had for Sea World, and I'll likely never visit (and purchase a ticket there) after the movie.

I've heard that Blackfish is not entirely trustworthy (in regards to some of the things said about staff treatment by management)
which honestly I'm not surprised, I wouldn't trust anything disgruntled employees have to say about their ex-employers

Honestly stargate, it is true, seaworld, when it comes to orcas, has treated them horribly.

This may or may not be an improvement, but ideally they just release the orcas.
