Yes, but zoos have moved far from that in recent times, many animals have a substationally longer lifespan in captivity these days. However as mentioned, this is not the case with the Orcas at Sea World, they have a handful of whales that live past their average of twenty to thirty years but more of them die younger. And the tanks are literally four concrete walls filled with water to my knowledge, the only enrichment they get is from each other, a few toys and the shows they perform. And no matter what excuse people give, there has never been a documented case of Orcas being aggressive towards humans in the wild even when they are given the opportunity, however the whales in captivity have tormented and killed trainers before. The animals currently there cannot be released, but I think there should be a ban on breeding new whales until they can live more enriched lives within captivity. Even if they stopped breeding, Sea World has plenty of orcas throughout it's many parks to work with. |

I'm glad most of us can agree that SeaWorld is making changes for the better. |

I feel that even though SeaWorld is well, obviously improving for the better, I'd say remove the circus-like shows for the animals. Sure, it may be fun watching a sea lion be comedic, but does it have any educational value? Little to no. Since when did otters balance on balls in the wild? ![]()

Do we know that they actively enjoy it or do they just do it for extra food rewards/affection from the trainers? |

well we know at least some of them enjoy tricks, and I've never seen an animal denied extra food or affection because it didn't want to perform quite the opposite, one time their vulture didn't feel like performing, so everyone went over and made a big fuss over it |

Perhaps not on balls, but maybe floating logs ?

I don't see what's wrong with things like this. It's just keeping the animal entertained, making it work for food instead of just giving it some fish. Unless tricks like these are unhealthy for the animal, I don't see why they shouldn't. It keeps the visitors entertained as well. Just as in ZT2, entertained guests = money. And while otters balancing on balls may not have educational value, the money that guests pay to view otters balance on balls (among other things) is very important. Doesn't Sea World sponsor quite a few marine mammal shelters? And how much money do they attribute to research programs? Quite a bit as well. |

I dunno, I just feel like, in most countries animal acts in a cirucs are banned, I don't agree with the shows in Las Vegas (like Sigfried and Roy and the tigers etc.) sure, it's exercise and sure it raises money. But couldn't you have them do behaviors that are more natural? The orca tricks like beaching themselves on the platform, spy-hopping, jumping and things of that nature I don't mind - orcas in the wild do it, some of them are hunting behaviors. Having a wave machine and teaching them to surf through them, I'd be fine, it's documented in the wild. But teaching them things like balance this ball on your nose or stand on this ball, things that have been taught purely for show reasons is what I don't agree with. That's just my personal qualm, as long as the animals are not actually forced, it's not a major problem. But to me I've always felt more touched watching animals do natural things rather than man-made tricks. Keiko may not have succeeded in re-introduction but Free Willy touched my heart far more than any Seaworld Show, and I've been to...Orlando's I think it was when I was young. |

I know it's harmless and all. It could even be enriching. I should've mentioned that the AZA are just sticklers, since they frown on a ton of things, including certain enrichment having to be used off-exhibit and etc etc. I'm going off-topic. Kinda sounded a little more different than I wanted it to be ![]() Does anyone know if the performing pinnepeds and otters have their own separate enclosure, or are they held behind-the-scenes? I am happy to hear that Sea World is finally making changes to their orca habitats. Doubling the size (length, width and depth) will be a lot better for them. Having rocks to rub themselves on and powerful currents in their tank will be a lot more enriching for them. I dont mind the orcas being in shows, its the shows themselves that need to change. I wanna see a more educational show like the Shamu Story and even showing some footage of actual wild orcas on the big screen during the, If they could do that too, Sea World would be a whole lot better. |

Believe was an absolutely inspirational show. One Ocean educates while it inspires, through the music and the story line. A single drop of water rippling in a stream becomes one of billion rushing to the sea. A single person who sees a show can be changed forever and makes changes in the world. I was truly inspired by One Ocean. The whole time I had tears in my eyes and a huge smile on my face. It was beautiful. SeaWorld Orlando has Shamu Close Up and SWC and SWT have The Shamu Story as well as One Ocean. I don't think the shows need to change. You learn about so much from the other programs as well as the shows. I wish I had the chance to travel to the Pacific to see wild Killer Whales or the chance to go to Africa and see Giraffes and Elephants in the wild but me and so many other people don't. This is why zoo's and aquariums are so crucial. These animals become ambassadors for their wild counterparts and teach us to care and learn more than we ever thought we could. The trainers at SeaWorld have a motto. "I have two kids in school and seven in the pool." Of course that changes between park and amount of kids, but these whales are like their second families. Their relationships are not just based off fish and you can see that in the way that they interact with one another. |

The term even can count with farm animals. I mean yes, you can go to a farm but why drive 1-2 hours away when you can see em right at the zoo? Oops that was off-topic, but could relate to the captivity thing But as I asked earlier, does anyone know if performing pinnepeds and otters have a viewable enclosure, or are they held off-exhibit? |
