Proud to be an American

Well, it started out pretty normal, I had bought a half scoop of okie dirt and was spreading it around the san augustine sod. When I was watering the dirt in, a white pigeon flew in.
I didnt think a whole lot of it, even though we rarely get pigeons around here, not to mention white ones. He was drinking the water running down the driveway like he'd never had water before, and he wasnt afraid of me putting the hose right by him. I kept watering, and after around ten minutes, he flew up in the tree and proceeded to nap. Then I noticed he was banded.
I had never seen a racing pigeon before, but i knew they always had bands and were known to mak e pit stops at peoples houses. So i set some seed out on the limb he was on and went inside.
I looked online and learned how to read the tags. So i caught him and put him in a box with a little water andd a little seed, and read his bands. One was for id, which showed the organization and club he belonged to, his brood year, and an id number. Tthe other was one they would have taken off at the finish. I called the number for the club and learned he was let loose south of my house this morning and was to fly to wichita, kansas. The man was supposed to call back to tell me what to do but never has. I left the bird in the box and went in again.

Not a half hour later, i went to check on him and he had keeled over dead. He crapped everywhere and died. His green doodoo leads me to believe he died of paratyphoid. I guess ill call the man in the morning and i hope he doesnt want the body, because that thing went in the trash pretty quick.

Just thought id share, seeing as how that was one of the weirdest things ive done in a while. Also, on a side note, i read up on racing pigeons, and apparently most racers have a ton of pigeons for eaach race because the mortality rate is like 60%. There is also some concern over the use of performance enhancing drugs in pigeon racing. thought that was pretty interesting.

I had a pigeon similarly frequent my house a few years back, (its important to note I have at least 7 miles of just woods on all sides) and we would feed it some rice or bird seed and give it some water and he'd be on his way. Stopped coming after a while though, I think a hawk got him.

Anyways sorry that the poor thing died on you xD

No they most likely do not.
Racing with doves is pretty common over here and we've had a few pigeons that have flown against our windows. We called the owners and they almost never wanted the (sometimes even living) pigeons back.

Would you look at me? I'm setting records.

You should have cooked it for a later lunch ;)

huh, I would have expected more interest into the causes of its death
but I suppose this would have been a "for profit" racing pigeon rather than a hobby pigeon

I once "saved" a couple young pigeons that couldn't fly (fell off a building during construction), I gave them to a breeder since I couldn't keep them
