Anybody else here involved in herpetoculture? Not really talking about someone with 1 gecko or someone with one snake. But people with fairly decent sized collections, breeders, etc. This would be a good place to discuss husbandry practices, breeding techniques, inquires about breeders, etc. It would also be a great place for new comers to ask questions. My collection is somewhat small, but is made up of some fairly rare animals. I manly focus on rear fanged snakes, Eurasian rat snakes and venomous, but I also have a pet alligator. 1.0 American Alligator - Oscar 1.0 Uruguayan Mussurana 1.0 False Water Cobra 1.0 Madagascan Leaf-nosed Snake 1.0 Chinese King Ratsnake 1.0 Royal Diadem Ratsnake 0.0.1 Taiwan Beauty Snake 0.0.1 Black Rat Snake 1.0 Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake As you can see I desperately need to pair up a lot of my animals, but being in college and how expensive some of those animals can be it may be awhile. |

I used to breed anoles of various species, including Haitian White Lipped, Puerto Rican Crested, and Bahaman anoles. I've also had some oddball animals here and there including a pair of Japalura splendida and some tokays. That was mostly for fun though. Now I'm down to a snake and a gecko.

A male and female pair. A second female lived with them for about a week- a friend gave me her then she got sold since there wasn't really room for all three. They bred with some degree of success. Edited by Admiral General Aladeen, Nov 4 2014, 01:04 AM.

You've got a pretty good collection there! This kind of topic is exactly what I need right now! I'm having some trouble with my turtles, when I bought them I was told they were brothers but some days ago I found eggs in the tank! Five was totally crushed but I managed to save one if them. If this egg actually is fertilized, it probably didn't make it.. It's probably drowned or been injured when I moved it from the tank. But I'm not going to throw it away, you never know, there might be a little turtle in there ![]() Well, back to the problem. Atleast one of my turtles is, in fact, a female. And I'd love to know which one. I would also like to know the gender of the second turtle, if it turns out they are both females, I can't try to breed them. So, anyone here who knows how to gender a Reeves turtle?

Okay guys, time to guess the gender of my turtles! We know at least one of them is a female. But who? And I'm sorry for the bad cellphone images, my camera has no battery atm! Turtle 1, Sauron Turtle 2, Gandalf Pic of them together So, as you can see, Gandalf is a little larger than Sauron. Any ideas who might be the female?

If I remember my lessons correctly: When you look at the shell on the belly of the turtles, you should be able to see the difference. A females belly is straight/flat, while a males is more hollow. |

Yeah, there was something about the belly of male tortoises being a little concave opposite to the felmale's which is completely flat, but I don't know if it's the same with turtles... As for my animals: I got two Garter Snake boys and two Corn Snake girls. You have some interesting snakes on your list there, I'd love to see some pics of them! Do you think you can show us some? ![]() Edited by Unicorn, Nov 4 2014, 04:06 PM.

I don't think it's the same with water turtles ![]() But I have one thought. As you see in the pictures, Saurons "cloaca" is further down than Gandalfs. Check step two on this site: http://www.wikihow.com/Tell-if-a-Turtle-Is-Male-or-Female That might be a clue

Box turtles and most tortoises can be sexed by looking at the plastron, but most aquatic turtles are sexed by looking at tail length and claw length. Judging by the pics I would say that they're either both females, or the first one is a male. The second one is definitely a female. The first one is confusing me because it has short claws but the tail looks a bit longer. But I would say they're most likely both female with the 2nd being a definite female. As for my collection, here are a couple pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
