I'm planning on building a 2.3 hectare savanne exhibit. It will be housing Giraffes, Zebras, Giant Elands and Thomson's Gazelles for sur, but I want to add more animals to it. With the size of the exhibit, would it be realistic to add a river with a length of 200 meters and add a few Hippopotamus to the exhibit? I'm also thinking of adding White Rhinoceros and/or Cape Buffalos, is that possible? |

I would separate the exhibit using poles or some other device, you could allow the zebras and other animals to enter both areas but I would keep the hippos and giraffes separted, that combo is a recipie for disaster imo. Take Copenhagen zoo for example, IIRC they have a large Savannah expanse split into 3 parts: giraffe, rhino and hippo. Smaller creatures such as zebra and antelope can roam around all three areas This image shows the division between the hippo area and the other savannahs ![]() Google it for more images of this exhibit. You could do something similar to this? Edited by Bhutan, Apr 8 2016, 11:34 AM.

In my own zoo I have included arapaima, silver arrowana, black pacu, ocellated river stingray and red tail catfish. I believe they can all co-exist although I too would like to know firstly if that combo is suitable and secondly if there are any others that I can add to the collection |

Yeah, but Mata Matas eat fish, so it would be a problem when they eat the baby fish |

@Koenzoo and Bhutan, Monde Sauvage in Aywailles has a pond with a pair of hippos in their large savanna. I'd say the combination Rhino/Hippo would be more of a recipe for disaster, either with giraffes should be fine. Monde sauvage has these animals in the large savanna: -Black sable antelope -Blue wildebeest -Chapman's zebra -Common eland -Common hippopotamus -Common impala -Giraffe -Greater kudu -Grey crowned crane -Red lechwe -Scimitar-horned oryx -Southern ostrich -Watussi cattle And then there's two separate exhibits 'inside' of the savanna, one with Southern white rhinoceros, and one for African elephants. |

Having a Pronghorn exhibit, but the males are seperated by the females during mating season, since they get riled up. |

Thank you ![]() Do you know if Cape Buffalo could fit in or should I choose between the buffalos, rhinos and hippos? |

Theres a zo here in Italy that does that combo, but yeah, I wouldn't try to repeat it, seems too risky. |

I'd say more likely you'd have to choose between the buffs and hippos, SDZSP keeps Southern White Rhinoceros and Cape Buffalo together, granted it's a HUGE paddock, but together they are nonetheless

Thank you for your advice. The exhibit will be around 200*100 meters, so I guess that will be big enough

I was watching a video of people in a zoo going through a South American building for inspiration for my zoo building, and I could have sworn I saw Mata Mata and some kind of Caiman combined together. Would this combination work? If so I'd like to combine Yacare Caimans and Mata Mata in an enclosure. |

Of course. That combination can work, unless they have enough food of fish. |

@KoenZoo, I actually forgot a species in that combination. They also have Watussi cattle, which are calmer than buffalo, but otherwise very similar in build/niche/size. I think buffalo would do fine, as long as the exhibit is large enough as stated by Fireplume. |
