First, that's a caribou, not an elk. Second, that stance is aggressive and I doubt that they would peacefully co-exist. Third, if you want elk, mix them with other ungulates like bison or smaller deer. They COULD but it would stress the living daylights out of the foxes and they would mostly hide. Ok firstly, just because something can be combined, doesn't mean it should be. The Jackal and Chimp exhibit at Taranga was a failure due to a mutual fear between the animals. The jackals were built holes which they didn't come out of until the chimps were in bed. The jackals in the early days of the experiment nipped at the chimps. For your planned yellowstone exhibit, combine the elk and bison if you really want combo. Wolves and grizzlies are cool enough on their own but many zoos combine them so I guess you could do that, with a medium sized aviary for bobcats adjacent to it. |

Aww man... Could a Nile monitor live with a juvenile Nile crocodile? Both have similar lives and are from the same part of Africa |

You know this would a lot easier if you just made a list instead of posting an outrageous combo every 20 minutes.

Also no, both reptiles are aggressive predators and would most likely attack each other. |

If you have tree cover you could keep the monitors with adult crocodiles, though they would just avoid each other so not much point. |

Franklin Park Zoo has red pandas in their children's section, and also prairie dogs. Small children tend to enjoy farm animals, and/or cutesy critters. |

Most likely not a good idea either, if the monitor just spends all the time up in the trees (especially a large and water dwelling species like Nile) it's because it's scared/stressed by the crocodiles, so it's definately a not working combo. Edited by Furka, Jan 26 2018, 11:46 AM.

In the wild big crocodiles eat monitor lizards and monitor lizards eat little crocodiles, they would not be appropriate cage mates except for the brief time in the crocodile's life where both are comparable in length. Zoos in real life don't mix pandas with anything, they're too rare and valuable if something went wrong. In general bears don't mix with other bears. Red panda could be compatible with a large area and if the red panda could avoid the giant panda by staying up high but from what I've seen of them in zoos they are pretty slow-moving and clumsy and I think it would probably end up eaten by the bear. Elephants and mammoths would be compatible if they were raised together as the living elephants are but there could be issues with diseases spreading between them or hybridization with Asian elephants. Good petting zoo animals besides domesticated species are fallow deer, whitetail deer and elk (outside rutting season), red-necked wallaby, emu, rhea (females are mellow, males are usually too aggressive), reindeer, camels, and walk-through aviaries for small parrots (lorikeets, budgerigars and cockatiels.) Historically zoos housed hand-reared baby exotics in petting zoos including giraffes and antelope (works pretty well and serves to socialize the babies), big cats (not a good idea because they have sensitive immune systems) and even elephants (a really bad idea, elephants only socialized to people will never grow up to be normal elephants.) Additionally cute or endearing animals like red pandas are popular choices for these sections. Some other cute animals I'd say could work, as long as they are not able to be handled, are lemurs, raccoons, fennec foxes and koalas. |
