I am wondering. Tufted Deer... Is there anything we can mix it with? Pro : - deers species are usually "easy" to mix with other species, if they are not competing/threatened by them. Con : - Tufted deers tend to live less longer in captivity than in the wild, so they sound like quite a nervous species. I already planned to exhibit them in an exhibit far from the path, with an elevated path at a respectful distance from the enclosure, but still I would like to add other species with them if I can. Any ideas or real life example of multi-species exhibit with them? |

Now that you ask it, no I can't think of a single mixed Tufted Deer enclosure. Maybe something like Monal or another shy large ground bird would work. |

I've heard of a combination with tufted deer with gharials, I also heard about muntjacs and cranes. |

Muntjac are very easily combinable with a whole lot of things. I've seen them with Malayan Tapir, Red Pandas, multiple Crane species, Peafowl, etc. etc. Certainly one of the easier combined animals. Tufted Deer... I wouldn't know. Edited by Anton, Feb 25 2015, 04:28 PM.

Tufted deers have been exhibited alongside cranes, lesser adjutants, red pandas, gorals, turtles, geese and all kind of Asian deers (ranging from muntjacs to Père David's deers) without any major problems. |

What small to medium African animals, preferably mammals, can I combine and add for a walkthrough. |

Thank you Jasper! Appreciate it! @AVCDPS: Well definitely Barbary Macaque, and African breeds of domestic animals. I can't think of anything that could otherwise be safe for guests (and the animals) to actually be in exhibit with. I will say though that giraffe feeding encounters are super popular, so I'd go in that direction instead. San Diego Zoo actually has a backstage tour, on which part of it you can feed Okapi (and Black Duiker, but they're horribly shy) so maybe something lIke that could work instead. |

Aren't macaques aggressive tho ? Perhaps vervet monkeys would be a better choice ? |

There exists Barbary Macaque walkthroughs (not that I knew that until recently) but I really have no idea if vervet monkeys would work or not. Could perhaps something like Guereza work? Sure they're arboreal, but they seem confident enough that they could be in a walkthrough.

One dutch zoo has different kinds of monkey in walkthroughs (Apenheul), including barbary macaque, squirell monkey, howler monkey and tamarins. So a walkthrough could work for all these species. I've never heard of guereza of vervet monkey walkthroug, so I'm not sure about that. |

Squirrel Monkeys, Howlers and Tamarins aren't African though ![]() Alwetterzoo Münster has a Guereza walkthrough but the animals tend to stay away from the path, I've never heard of a Vervet Monkey one though. You probably meant mainland Africa, but if Madagascar is also good, I'd say pretty much all (common) Lemur species are safe too. |

Vervets should be safe, I've seen wild vervets in a village. Other animals might be flamingoes or other large birds (with the vervets maybe?), clipped or in an aviary. I've also seen a Humboldt penguin - Chilean flamingo walkthrough, so you might be able to africanize those to African penguins - greater flamingo? |

Yes of course lemurs and barbary monkeys, hyraxes and a lot of birds (vultures, storks, weaver birds, ect.) also can be keept in a walkthrough exhibit. |

I'm planning an African flooded field exhibit centred around the Cape Buffalo, similar to that at Knowsley Safari Park where I worked for a while. Then they were combined with fallow & Pere David's deer, rhea and sitatunga. I was thinking of combining my buffalo with wetland antelope species like kob, lechwe, nile lechwe, sitatunga, or waterbuck, and possibly a large bird species like crowned cranes or shoebills. I want a combination of a few species that is natural, safe and aesthetically varied. Any comments/suggestions?
