These combos are really cool! Never really thought about combining bears with other animals, but if you think about it, it's not that odd. Bears are generally not that aggressive, plus most of those bears barely even touch meat ![]() Bison + black bear: I think bison calves are too big to be taken by black bears (especially nearby healthy adults, which is always in a zoo), though I suppose there's a separate exhibit without bears. Monkeys/otters/binturong/tapir + sloth bear/spectacled bear/sloth bear: Sloth bears rarely prey on other animals (except termites) and I doubt they would do so if other food is accessible. Sun bears barely eat meat as well. While spectacled bears are more carnivorous than sloth bears, they still only have a small percentage of meat in their diets, and I don't think they'd kill if the food offered by the zoo includes the required amount of meat. Black bears + deer: Adult deer/large deer don't seem too much of a problem here, but the fawns hopefully have a separate enclosure. Bears + other predators: Most predators stay clear of one another and problems only arise when there's either a territorial conflict or lack of prey (so they fight for prey). Lack of prey/food is never the case in zoos (or should never be), territorial conflict I believe occurs mostly within the same species, so not too much of a problem either. |

I've seen American Black Bear + Red Fox, which worked EXTREMELY well. |

For the most part those combinations work incredibly well. You can usually tell when both species hang around together. I forget where, but I remember about a year ago seeing a paper begging a zoo to separate this bear and fox exhibit they had, because the foxes spent 90% of their time in the various tunnels and bolt holes leading to indoor houses because the bears terrorized the foxes. Regardless, the vast majority of those combinations work well and are pretty damn cool. |

Maybe a stupid question but it's fine if I can combine pronghorn with bison and elk, correct? |

Yeah it should be fine, the different species would just segregate themselves really. |

And pronghorn, the most vulnerable to an attack from the neighboring species, and more than capable of getting out of the way. |

Berlin Zoo : have Bongos and Okapis , don't know if they are seperated thought (Seems like there is a Fence between the 2 exhibits) . Sacramento Zoo Keep them with Red River Hogs ![]() Cinnicinati Zoo (IIRC) keep them with Eland I think you can keep them with some duikers species (I had see a Zoo Photo with both) , and maybe Royal Antelope. I don't think both Duikers and Okapis are a good idea because they are pretty shy right? Red river hogs sounds cool though, thanks. |

You could combine bongos with birds. Perhaps even monkeys, assuming they aren't bothered by "hyperactive" primates. |

(Okapis can be combined perfectly with duikers, as seen in Antwerp Zoo, they are combined with dik-diks there. Not sure about bongos though...I doubt they're kept in the same exhibit.) |

Hmm seems you are right. I thought that wouldn't work out, but I found more zoos combining different species of Duikers with Okapis:![]() with Yellow-backed duiker ![]() with Red-flanked duiker |

Few questions: 1. Would it be possible to combine corsac foxes and large ungulates like Przewalski's horses or Bactrian camels? 2. Indian rhino + rhesus macaque? I wanted to combine them with pygmy hogs first, but since those are rare, I don't think I'll do it. 3. Barbary sheep + ibex? 4. Combining birds of prey of similar size shouldn't be too much of a problem or am I wrong? Specifically talking about griffon vultures and imperial eagles here. That's about it |
