Type of Exhibit: (In which type of exhibit should the animal be kept in?)
The mongoose lemur should be kept like other lemurs. They should have an outdoor exhibit with lots of trees and branches and and indoor exhibit that mimics their natural habitat. In a smaller exhibit without a moat around it it is highly recommended to have a roof on the fence that you put in. The mongoose lemur is a skilled climber and should require many climbing objects. For fencing use a material similar to an aviary's mesh to contain your lemurs.

Temperament:
The temperament of the mongoose lemur is not well studied. One thing however is they live in small groups. When groups encounter each other physical confrontations are rare. Aggressive vocalizations are made instead. Mongoose lemurs are friendly towards other species of lemurs and will do quite well sharing an exhibit together.

Diet:

The Mongoose Lemur mostly eats fruit, though flowers, leaves and nectar also make up part of its diet, making it an important pollinator in many ecosystems.

Social Needs:
As stated before mongoose lemurs live in small groups. Groups in captivity can be from about 2-5 with 7 being a suggested limit.

Reproduction:

Quote:

Females are generally dominant to males, having preferential choice over food and mates. Mating is seasonal, with single offspring (rarely twins) being born from August to October, just before the rainy season, after a gestation period of around 126 – 128 days. The infant is weaned at approximately 135 days old, and young are forced to leave the group when they mature at around 2.5 to 3.5 years old

Extra Information:
  • They are one of the only two species of lemur that is located in and out of Madagascar
  • They are thought to have been an introduced species to the Comoros islands.
  • They are sexually dimorphic
