Hello people, I always wanted to see zoos around the world, so here we are. I will present photos of zoos I had been lately. Feel free. If the will be others, please join and show as many zoos as possible. If there will be more, we can make an index. For the start I want to credit each zoo with a single post, so we can add the links in the index. So I hope in that case a double-post will be allowed Shown: Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium Zoo Cologne Zoo Ueno Edited by Papageno, Dec 28 2014, 11:05 AM.

Okinawa-Churaumi-Aquarium translated: beautiful sea located: Ishikawa, Island Okinawa, Japan This Aqiarium blew me away. Maybe in Dubai or America there are bigger aquariums, but this was a highlight to me. May I present you this: Direct in the entrance there are statues and this wonderful turtle ![]() Welcome to biggest aquarium until 2005, which is surrounded by a big garden with some rebuild ancient japanese houses. ![]() 10,000 cubic metres (2,642,000 US gal) in 77 tanks show animals from all around the world as well as their own country. ![]() From the seaside you can have a look on this building. Parts are under the earth and all is not to far from the shore, because of the tsunami's danger still far enough away. Inside you start with big coral reef tanks with different parts for hiding and nocturnal species. ![]() ![]() Also animals from the mangroves or japanese endemics are shown like Sicyopterus lagocephalus and Stiphodon percnopterygionus ![]() Infos are in japanese, english and of course latin. But also other informations are given, like this sign. ![]() You even can touch different shark skins or watch different species in formaledehyde, of course informing, but also a bit creepy. The largest tank contains 7,500 cubic metres (1,981,000 US gal) and this is the main-tank, containg whale-shars, ray, thuna-species, shars as well as a school of dolphins in just one tank. ![]() The whale sharks are young, but seem to be too big for its tank. The fins are looking injured, mybe from scratching the tank walls. ![]() When you leave the main house you can visit more of the mammal-inhabitants, which belong to the 740 species inhabitated in the aquarium. ![]() ![]() This part is the weakest part of the zoo. Manatees as well as the sea-turtle center and the whale-tank including a show with orca and false orca. A video of the only born Manatee in their parc is shown during the visit. I hope you have an impression. Edited by Papageno, Dec 26 2014, 12:04 AM.

Kölner Zoo located: Cologne, Nordrhein-Westphalen, Germany It is the third oldest, still existing zoo of germany opened 1860. At 20 hectares (49 acres) 783 species are presented to all ages of visitors. I liked the whole atmosphere, although it sometimes looked a bit small. ![]() Maybe someone would like to remake the shady stable like this? A relativly new building is some croc-hippo-mixed dome. ![]() At the outer part you see Sitatungas, Crown Crane with places to hide from, of course, the hippos. And in the backround you see some outer parts of the malagassy houses. ![]() In the inside the journey really gives somthing extra, perches, free flying grey parrots lizards, other birds and more: ![]() Of course also some older architecture is to mention, like this one: ![]() For apes you have the gorillas together with the diana-monkey. in the indoor-part you see more species with their own paths over your heads.![]() ![]() Or the typical baboon-rock and the classical bear in his ditch. A must see in the zoo is the elephant-house. It was planned to house 2 bulls as well as a big herd of asiatic elephants. ![]() ![]() And now good-bye ![]() ![]() Edited by Papageno, Dec 25 2014, 07:55 PM.

Zoo Ueno 恩賜上野動物園 located: Tokyo, Japan 1882 opened it is Japan's oldest zoo. Originally built for the imperial family it is opened to evryone a long time now. In the middle of the city, surrounded by high towers and a parc, space is rare. For visitors from Europe itis cheap, about 5€ for an adult person. This zoo definetly has a space problem and it's parted in two sections. You can move between them using a brigde or a big monorail, which connects the 14.3 ha (35 acres) of zoo. ![]() Critique: Like already said, there is a space problem. They definetly doing a lot to solve it and have some architectural impressive conclusions, but especially the Ungulates of the zoo don't have much space and are partly outsourced to another Tokyo zoo, laying outside the city. Some photos of that you find in the spoiler below. Spoiler: click to toggle Also the Steller's Sea Eagle are sitting on a small island in the middle of a lake in the zoo. They are not surrounded by any fence, so they maybe are chained or their wings are cut. ![]() ![]() The lake itself is full of Lotus-flowers and you walk over a bridge threw the lake to the madagascan section, containing Fossa, Katta, different Lemurs as well as a house for a breeding group of Aye-ayes. ![]() ![]() Native animals are also shown, sometimes hidden or with only some space. Therefor you got a lot of smaller aviaries with birds all over the world, including seabirds, different cranes and also native birds (famous cranes as well as not so well known dove species). Some of the older buildings in the start of the zoo still got their own style. I was wondering, why there is a net above the penguins, but after some time in the zoo I was mentioning bunches of crows, which seem very large - and therefore dangerous for penguins. ![]() Quiet a big amount of nocturnal animals are shown in differents sections of the zoo. A new section with rather much space was build lately for lions, tigers, gorillas and elephants. Some impressions in the spoiler below. Spoiler: click to toggle The japanese coziness is shown in the zoo. Next to quiet some beautiful sitting areas (the food is as "good" as in evry other zoo I know). In the new section there is some drizzle to cool the visitors. ![]() In the older part of the zoo there are also quiet some inventions. Like in the rest of the city of Tokyo, buildings are growing in the hight. You find some hills, in which you find more cages and aviaries. Even them you can walk them on ground-level or watch one section higher. And all this behind the jungle of the dholes. ![]() ![]() Also a big tropical house especially for reptiles and native amphibians is build. Not only famous ones like the giant newt also common ones like the japanese pond turtle or endangered frogs and newts. More pictures - spoiler below Spoiler: click to toggle Some things are just japanese inventions like this otter cube or a animal high tower. ![]() ![]() Some other pictures: Spoiler: click to toggle So say sayonara and visit the famous japnese pandas: ![]() Edited by Papageno, Dec 28 2014, 11:07 AM.
