A map of Lataria

50 years from now the World War III starts. Dieseases run wild and people are dying by the thousands. The new Council of Nations decides to send a limited number of refugees from the USA, the UK, Russia, China, Brazil, Kenya, South Africa, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, France, Canada, Argentina, and Mexico to a large island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean near the equator. These people are going to build a civilization on the island and live there until the outside world is seen hospitable. But there's one problem, nobody has ever surveyed the island because the seas around the island are extremely rough and planes can't fly in because of the huge storms that usually surround the island and the only way it has been seen is from satilites. But they must go to the island to survive. By extreme luck the armored vessel carrying all of the refugees and their resources makes it through the rough seas to the island. The people got off the boat and were shocked by what they saw, living-breathing prehistoric animals. Here's a quote from a scientist that was one of the first humans to set foot on the island.

" These mighty beasts were amazing, on the beach a herd of hadrosaurs greeted us, and as exploration teams moved further into the island to find a safe spot to make camp they found great herds of ornithomimids and ceratopsians plodding across the plains. This is a monumental discovery. It looks like extinction for these beasts was not forever"

Welcome to Lataria.

Next time I will share how Lataria was formed and how the animals survived the K-P extinction.

(Sorry if you don't like the story, it was just a way to bring humans and prehistoric animals together.)

The story is interesting...
However, I like that humans just detected the island shortly before their extinction.
This seems to be a nice speculative evolution idea :D

Do you guys want me to add a marker on the map to show where the humans landed?

(A small qoute to hold you guys over to tomorrow.)

"That first night I woke up when I heard a low growl come from the edge of camp. I snatched my rifle, making sure it was loaded, and then crept out of the tent opening. I looked to the left to see the gaurd asleep by the fire, then I looked right and saw two eyes gleaming yellow. Then the owner of the eyes got out of stalking position knowing he had been seen. I then saw exactly what it was. A large allosaurid with black feathers and gray stripes on the black background. The beast stared at me for a minute, obviously curious because he had never seen a human before, then he sulked back off into the bush. I will never forget that night."- qoute from the scientist.

How Lataria was Formed.

Lataria was first formed when as a base island in the late Triassic when a volcano erupted out at sea after it's miniature plate collided with a larger plate near the equator. From there Lataria was only an island uninhabited by any animals except pterosaurs until the late Jurassic. A chunk of land broke off North American due to pressure on it's own miniature plate and drifted toward Lataria, carrying with it animals, including dinosaurs. The miniature plates collided and formed the base for the Highlands we see on Lataria today. Then in early Creataceous a piece broke off Africa and drifted towards Lataria, carrying its own wildlife, on its own miniature plate until they collided, pushing up the Highlands even more. Then finally in the late Creataceous chunks of land broke off North America, Asia, and South America. Each one having it's own miniature plate and each one carrying its own wildlife they all drifted toward Lataria until they collided with Lataria. The force from so many plates over that span of time pushed the Highlands up to where they are today. Later on the plates fused together forming one large plate called the Lataria Plate. That is how Lataria was formed.

How the Animals survived the K-P extinction event.

65 million years ago something happened that brought the world to its knees. Some speculate that it was a meteor hitting the Yucatan peninsula. some speculate otherwise, but what matters is that much of the life on earth at the time went extinct. All dinosaur, pterosaurs, and sea reptiles went extinct except on Lataria . It is thought that it happened during the wet season where it rains almost without end for five months. This means that there is very thick cloud cover all over the island. It is speculated that the dust and ash couldn't penetrate throught the dense rain clouds. But when the rains ended life was only mildly affected. The reason for this is that the plants on Lataria have adapted to the long months of rain and need very little sunlight. They have energy storing leaves and roots as a back-up system if the sun fails to shine during this time of year. These remarkable plants are the reason that life survived on Lataria.

Next time would you rather hear information about the different regions on Lataria or see some flora and fauna?

The Ungeradian Desert

Posted Image

This is the dry desert of Lataria full of odd fauna and flora, actually the name means "odd desert" in german. The conditions in the desert are actually very similar to the Kalahari Desert in Africa with there being plants in abundance. There are also oasises shortly distanced from each other when the conditions are good. In the picture above you see many odd plants, some being the spear plants and desert cycad shown above. These are Lataria's version of cacti with the plants requiring very little water and having the energy storing roots that have been mentioned earlier. But what's most notable about these plants are their odd appearances. The fauna isn't as odd though. Most of the desert herbivore consist of hadrosaurs, small to medium sized ceratopsians, pachycephalosaurs, and small quick ornithopods. The carnivores consist of mainly dromaeosaurs with the occasional albeisaur, tyrannosaur, and allosaur thrown in between. This area has sandstorms on a random basis. In the picture above you can see the local animals, a few hadrosaurs and a dromaeosaur, trying to make it to their hiding places to get away from the approaching sandstorm. Overall this is a very little explored part of Lataria and there are still things to be discovered.
