It is thought the wolf came from nearby Germany, and after being seen a number of times it went back home across the border. There have been no official gray wolf sightings in the Netherlands since 1897. One was seen last June, but there was no recorded evidence.

Last june they found a dead one indeed, the whole country was freaking out xD but it was probably shot in Polen and then just brought to the Netherlands by some people ;)

Haha, good prank I guess! People have an irrational fear of these animals rooted in folklore, ignorance and misunderstanding. I hope they continue to expand their range westwards :).

One (maybe two) also found its way to the Natural Park my father works at, people have been finding tracks and feces, and Fallow Deers have already disappeared from the area.
It happened a few years ago too (found the foorprints on the beach), but we don't know if this is the same wolf from then or another one, which IMO is more likely given the lack of signs for years (and considering the wolf from back then killed two calves, I have a feeling about why it disappeared).
No one knows exactly where they come from tho, because while wolves are now basically common in some areas of Tuscany, the Natural park is pretty far from those places, and there's a lot of human settlements in the way.

That one looks so out of place in the "urbanized" environment.

The wolf has left the Netherlands and is seen in Germany again.

It would be great if wolves would return in one of the largest national parks in the Netherlands:
the Oostvaarderse Plassen. That might complete the ecosystem.

the biggest problem of the oostvaardersplassen is the fence surrounding it. And i am not sure if it is large enough to support a pack of wolves.
But thats the main issue for a lot of nature in the Netherlands. Most nature areas are simply too small and too far apart.
But i was quite happy to hear that wolves returned to the Netherlands

Okay, I take back what I said above, the new wolves turned out to be just normal dogs :P

Well, so long as it's the right subspecies of wolf, then things should be okay... what happened here is the wrong subspecies was introduced (the former species granted had been wiped into extinction, but still) and it's proved to be a very, very bad situation. We have giant monster wolves where we didn't, and the environment is paying for it.

It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.

the oostvaardersplassen are indeed a too small for a pack of wolves.
about the small nature areas. the Dutch government is really trying to connect the areas but those things just take time. and the Netherlands is a very densely populated country so that also limits the possibilities.

for the dutchies. this song about the wolf is absolutely amazing (as is the kwis)

Although I'm sure most of you have seen this already, this is one of the large projects aimed at restoring biodiversity and natural ecological processes in a range or countries and habitats across Europe. They have pages on everything from the return of the wolf and lynx to a backbreeding project aimed at recreating a proxy for the extinct aurochs. All very interesting stuff and definitely worth a read!
