So when visiting my grandpas pond yesterday and netting up some algae I stumbled upon an old friend of mine, algae/muskie the painted turtle... ...minus 2 hands :(

so i took the turtle to my mom,bla bla bla.....it was taken back home. how do i take care of the turtle (i'm not rich in the slightest) , until we can fix up the outdoor enclosure and the outside temperature stabilizes?

ps. how do i tell if it is a boy or a girl (eastern painted turtle)

I have kept some species of turtle and they can eat crickets, pieces of fish, earthworms, comercial turtle pellets, and some species can eat lettuce. You can buy a medium tank, cover the floor with gravel and fill it with water. Then add a couple rocks for the turtle to climb. You might also need a water heater, you can find them at most pet stores. Don't know about eastern painted turtles, but taricaya turtles (the ones I'm keeping now) have a flat belly when they are females. Hope this helps :)

Well, gravel can be nice, but there's a risk of impaction, and that it's just a lot more work to clean. Unless your turtle needs sand to dig in (i.e. softshells), then it's best to leave it bare ;)

Usually males will have long, skinny tails, and females have short, fat tails.
