So, I'm still a complete noob at this, but I wanted to try designing something. I thought I'd start with a model since I expected it to be somewhat easier for me, being used to drawing and having toyed with 3D sculpting before. It took some time getting used to blender's shortcuts and the way polygons behave but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. After a few completely failed attempts, I've managed to come up with a semi decent mermaid model [the tail is crazy long, but it's not meant to be the Disney type, as I mentioned here]. I'd love to hear what you guys think about it so far! Spoiler: click to toggle

Definitely interesting project, everyone loves realistic animals but I always like these kind of "different" projects, I hope we can see it finished! Also if you need help learning to design, there are a lot of nice tutorials in Spanish at ZooHispania (I see you already registered there), and also many at the Zoo Tycoon 2 Designing Center, those are a few years old but have a lot of useful info on coding and such. |

That's a really awesome model, especially being a fantasy creature, which not many people seem to make. For skinning (and really any other part of designing you could think of), there's some really good tutorials here, at Gaia, and at the ZT2 Designing Center.

Thanks kbcoon ^^ And indeed, realistic animals are wonderful, but I thought making this project would be interesting. It's giving me an excuse to polish some mermaid concepts I've had for a while... plus, there's a little less pressure since there is no real animal my model has to live up to. I'll make sure to check out the tutorials at all of those sites, thank you! |

Wow, a mermaid! This is seriously cool. I've always wanted a mermaid for ZT2, ever since I found them in the original game. The mesh looks nice, as well! Can't wait to see it skinned! On a side note, it would be cool if you could build a zoo entrance underwater, and have mermaids as your guests. Although that's probably impossible. Edited by Acinonyx Jubatus, Sep 3 2015, 12:20 AM.

Looks good, but the faces of the tail are a bit stretched! To fix this: Select all the stretched faces and then hit Ctrl+R for the loop cut

Very interesting project you have there! I would really like to hear the evolutionary background of your mermaid. Looks mammalian to me, the way the tail looks. Ever heard of the theory that human evolved in coastal regions? What if there were some hominids that got more adapted to that amphibian lifestyle? |

Is there any animations that can be used for mermaids? Anyway, that mermaid model is really awesome. I somehow think that it could be fatter and a bit longer and also have alphas running in the back of the tail, similar to the tails in H2O: Just Add Water. Yeah, I love to watch it. |

Looks great so far! I agree with Bigseal, you should aim for nearly quadratic faces on the tail because it animates and unwraps a lot better later on ![]() I also made a mermaid model years ago but lost it...

Thanks everyone! I've taken a bit long to reply since I wanted to post only until I had something new to show~ I'll add the new model at the end of the post, but for now, replies: @Ignacio: Gracias! It's always nice to see a community welcome a newbie like this ^^ @Acionyx Jubatus: Thank you ^^ and I know, right? I was doubly surprised, because of all the other cryptids + mythological creatures and because of the zt1 mermaids, to see there are no zt2 mermaids yet. And hah, underwater guests would be pretty cool, thought it does seem a 'little' too complex ^^" @Bigseal: Thanks for the tip! I've remade the tail and it definitely came in handy. @Doc118: Thanks And yep, the tail is a whale's tail, so it's definitely mammalian.I was definitely inspired by the aquatic ape hypothesis [along with some other stuff... namely this painting]. Though at first glance the aquatic ape seemed convincing [for the average Jane, starting highschool with no super serious knowledge of human evolution, anyway], it doesn't really fly. It rests on logical fallacies and there's no serious evidence to back it up. The author even ignored evidence that contradicts her. I find it a lovely thought, so I was pretty disappointed when I learned all that. But eh, I guess that's science. Art, on the other hand, can rescue the thought and use it to make enjoyable stuff [such as, hopefully, this model :v] regardless of what the truth of the matter is. @Bewilderbeast: I hope I can adapt some cetacean animations- If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. But I guess that will come later, after I'm done with skinning. I've remade the tail. It's a bit fatter now, so hopefully you'll like ![]() @Hendrix: Thank you! For both the compliment and the tip~ I've remade the tail, hopefully it's better now. @kepperbob: Thank you! I've noticed a slight shortage of those, so I hope to end up with a good addition to fix that ^^ So, here's the new model~ Extra views are posted on my dA sta.sh. ![]() P.S. I edited the neck and face a bit after the screenshot shown here, and posted a closeup in my sta.sh as well Edited by sevenspirals, Sep 6 2015, 06:23 PM.
