The Controversy of Zoos and Aquariums

Back in black shadow.

Yo guys, been a while. Recently for my Writing and Inquiry class in college, our third essay that we've began is an argumentative essay where we take a side on a topic and discuss our stance, and give evidence for our viewpoint. One of the topics that was available that I chose was Zoos. You all should know what I mean, how we have certain "animal rights activist" groups who are going around raising an uproar about how Zoos and Aquariums are nothing but "prisons of torture" for animals. As an extreme animal lover and forever ZT2 fan, ZT and ZT2 were the main games I grew up on as a child. These games taught me about the importance of zoos and other facilities around the world. Later on as I grew up I went on to dive deeper into the conservation efforts of zoos, and began doing research on my own for fun. I eventually ended up becoming a "member" (sponsor more or less) of the NWF. I absolutely love zoos and aquariums, and it infuriates me that these groups think zoos are so bad. I know that the only thing they're doing for leverage is using sparse, once-in-a-while cases as examples of the majority, which is a severe detriment. I know several of these come from Japan (the recent White Shark, anybody?), but that's a severe rant for another day, although that topic may indeed need to be brought up here.

Either way, I started this topic because I'm just wrapping up my Prewriting assignment for this essay. I was thinking of other ways on how to become more aware of this topic, and I remembered that i'm a member (and a decently well-known one) of this site, which does indeed have many parts to lend to it's credibility of information. What i'm asking for your help is basically to start a discussion which can in part educate me (as well as other people here) about what this controversy is. I know it's a big one, and I know a decent amount about it, but anything you all could give for advice or information would be helpful. I'd love to learn more about this topic with your help as I write my essay, and i'll happily share the final draft with you all when it's done, if you're interested.

Once again, thanks for your help, and although this is a touchy subject for us zoo lovers, I do hope we can keep this discussion level-headed and civil. Thank you!
