here is a topic where we can post pictures of recently extinct animals and plants.. this will let us be aware of the fauna and flora that have just recently left us. please add in the year that these animals/plants were declared extinct. to start off the Western black rhino was declared to be extinct 2011 Though technically a subspecies, the loss of the Western Black Rhino – Africa’s northernmost rhino – is no less tragic. The dawn of the 20th Century saw the widespread rise of sports hunting decimate the rhino populations across central and western Africa. The declines only continued with increasingly industrialised agriculture and the corresponding loss of historic rhino habitat. Later, an epidemic of poaching swept across Africa and a horrific 98% of black rhinos were slaughtered between 1960 and 1995. The population of western black rhinos, already weakened by decades of overhunting, was hardest hit by the poaching crisis. By 1980, the western black rhino’s numbers had shrunk to just 110 animals in Cameroon and only 25 remaining in Chad. In 1997, just 10 survived, spread across 25,000 square kilometres of northern Cameroon. A 2001 WWF survey found just five remaining Western Blacks; these were the last confirmed sightings of the subspecies. A decade on, with no sightings in 10 years, IUCN declared the Western Black Rhino extinct. The demand for rhino horn, which today is worth more than its literal weight in gold, threatens the survival of all rhino species on the planet today. https://katandotheranimals.wordpress.com/author/katandotheranimals/ Edited by stygimoloch, Apr 21 2016, 09:49 AM.

Caspian Tigers weren't a subspecies per se, but an isolated western population of the Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), so i guess they're just regionally extinct http://www.wildlifeextra.com/go/news/caspian-tigers.html#cr For actually extinct tigers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javan_tiger https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bali_tiger |

What about species that might be extinct, but might also still exist? Yes I'm looking at you, Rhodonessa, ![]() The Pink-headed duck feared extinct since the 1950s, but unconfirmed sightings and parts of its range being inaccessible (swamp regions of northern Myanmar) suggest it may still exist.
