Okay. Well we're gonna do something at least. Even if it is the smallest most horrible game. We're gonna try. I'm taking your advice. Take time to plant the game first and learn how to do other stuff before actually making the game. I must learn how to do the AI dirt. Some people with me have experience with it already and are still learning. I want to know how to work unity before anyway so yeah. |

Should we talk about potential mechanics and gameplay ideas? Though I'm gonna stress that we need a good foundation first. Just maybe we can talk fantasy for a bit. |

Before we think much about gameplay, we need a convincing AI. It makes very little sense to focus on anything before that goal is achieved. So I'd recommend getting familiar with Behavior Trees, which is what I'm currently doing, and also already investigating possible ways of implementation. I really liked this introduction: http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/ChrisSimpson/20140717/221339/Behavior_trees_for_AI_How_they_work.php |

So what you're saying is that we shouldn't delve into any fantasy until we get a decent foundation? |

I don't know if I've stumbled upon this before! ![]() I've got a few suggestions for the new zoo tycoon style game! Number One: I'd suggest having a wide animal diversity. One of the best things about ZT2 is the HUGE group of animals we get to choose from. I think the game should include tons of the animals we already have that people made. Number Two: More fences, paths, scenery, and other building materials. We've got lots of amazing content creators out there for ZT2, maybe in this new game we can have tons of different fences and building materials to make them look like zoos you can visit in real life! Also if we had more paths and scenery that would be awesome! Number Three: Animal Enrichment. In ZT2 we have lots of climbing poles and ropes that we often use in cat enclosures, primate enclosures, and other enclosures. It'd be awesome if someone could program it so the animals could use things like these. I'm sure we could get some amazing pictures! These are just things I think everyone would like to have in the game! I hope this helped with some inspiration or anything!

Exactly. In the event that we can't get AI work, anything else we planned or created would be in vain. |

I have been toying with the idea of a spiritual Zoo Tycoon successor as the game seems painfully lacking in that aspect, as opposed to, like, Rollercoaster Tycoon or Simcity. (Even if all the custom content for ZT2 is amazing!) I'm actually doing game design in college, so I'm actually on to something. But for now, it's mostly future musing, considering my Unity skills consist of making a cube at the moment. But it's definitely something I wanna do at some point in life! Zoo Tycoon on Xbox One was a neat idea, but they were obviously aiming towards a different demographic, what with the focus being more on animal interaction than actually building and managing. (I still don't understand why the Zoo Limit is a thing.) And World of Zoo on the Wii, uh, that's a similar case. I'm sure they're great as standalone games provided they're played by the right people, though, but I never played them. |

Personally, I think we should go with the metric system for in-game measurements with every thing of fence being 1m |

I think there should be a Target Training feature in the game. That'd be cool, also if the person you play as had to make diets and enrichment for the animals. That'd be challenging

XD this is a coincidence.... I was working on a animal list for a hypothetical zt3 yesterday, and I stumbled onto this topic.... as well as how the biome system would work.... mind if I share them? (if they aren't too intrusive) anyways: I know a little C++ and html, (will go refresh on those before learning java and unity) and have made some models. I wouldn't mind being an animator/rigger when you get to the point where those are needed. Until I learn coding, or you need animals added I won't be of much use. I can wait a few years I might be able to convince someone I know who is learning programming to help out. did zt2 have branching ai? |

^ I don't see why you couldn't put forth ideas. While I can't do much in terms of coding and development, I'm fairly good at big picture thinking, concepts, connections, and planning. I'm also comfortable making models for objects such as fences, lamps, benches, etc. I'd be happy to help in anyway I can, just shoot me a PM. I also think its important to distinguish between whether this is a zoo design simulator, or a zoo management simulator. While ZT2's mini-games and zookeeper mode were interesting, I don't know if they need to be in a design game. With a more mature community the interests seem to be in creating exhibits, meeting animals needs, and building a successful zoo. Being able to take care of the animals individually- training them, feeding them, healing them- would probably require more development and I certainly wouldn't miss it. As for the Biome System, I'd actually like to move away form that and move back towards something like the original ZT. Having a wide selection of "ground cover" (types of grasses, leaf litter, underbrush, etc.) and different soils (dirt and sand of varying compositions) would allow us to create different biomes without them being predetermined. It also makes marine and aquatic enclosures more realistic. Zoo's don't specify if the water they use is "reef" or "coastal" water. They just use salt water and change the temperature. Freshwater in a hippo exhibit vs. a tiger exhibit doesn't change in a zoo, so why do we need 14+ varieties of shallow water. I also think bringing back the object customization from ZT would be a good idea. Being able to change certain parts of a models skin (texture, material, color) would allow for more variety without having to make more models. Edited by Chase, Sep 13 2016, 02:29 PM.

There's another thread dedicated to speculation and ideas. http://thezt2roundtable.com/topic/30017634/1/ Let's flood this with our hopes and desires while here we can talk programming and the nitty gritty. |

I would recommend using PandaBehavior trees: www.pandabehaviour.com While we could write our own BehaviorTree implementation or use other systems (rain AI etc), I like the simplicity of this approach and the realtime debugging visualization. We don't need fancy visual tree editors - that's for sissies. |

I know we're not up to this step yet, but with modelling, we should study the game Zoo Resort 3D. For what's supposed to be a budget title on the Nintendo 3DS, the modelling work on the animals is impeccable, on par with the best designers here. The models may also be not as byte heavy because it's on a handheld console. P.S. I'm also gonna try and make a Skype group so that we can discuss this to your heart's content. I really don't think I have to study modeling for games haha. And even then it's completely irrelevant at this stage... |
