Actually, for the Shasta ground sloth specifically, this is not that much of a problem. Desert ecosystems tend to change very slowly, not in the least because many desert species (plants, especially) are extremely long-lived. There are actually plants alive today in the Mojave desert that sprouted when there were still sloths walking around the place. Furthermore, we know from mummified dung remains that many of the plants they ate still grow in the same areas today. The only thing missing in the ground sloths habitat is its natural predator, but I highly doubt that sloth overpopulation would be a very imminent problem. |
