First Mesh Ever!; Large-spotted Genet

(Consider this my introduction post ;) Hello!)
Well, this is unexpected. After only a few days of discovering Hendrix's blender tutorials, I've downloaded blender gone and made my first-ever 3D thing. I started yesterday, and now here we are.

Let me tell you. Learning to use blender was not easy. This was mostly because of the confusing UI and infuriating keyboard shortcuts. I only used Hendrix's video to learn how to use Blender, and his is an OLDER version of blender, so it was pretty frustrating! I adapted after a bit of experimenting.

I chose to start with my favourite animal, Genetta tigrina. I'm finding meshing to be a really fun experience and I can't wait to animate it! As an aspiring creature designer, I am pretty happy with how this mesh is turning out.
Hopefully this venture into 3D design will be a good supplement to my 2D drawings c:

Really cool! Great job, especially for your first try! The head, especially, is spot-on!
I would only suggest adding a little more detail to the paws :)

Thanks!
Yeah, I was going to detail the paws, especially because genets have interesting paw pads!
However, I wasn't sure if I was starting to add too many polygons/vertices. I'm not sure what a "good" amount of polygons is for a zoo tycoon animal, or if it varies by animal size? I don't want to end up crashing the poor old game.

(Also... Apparently the bird icon in the title of this thread may have a specific meaning; it won't let me remove it though.)

From the looks of it, you're pretty solid on the polycount with the head. The area around the neck and shoulderblades could use some reduction, but as far as I can tell you're nowhere near crashing the game if you add a little more definition to the paws, especially if you use LODs (although detail in the paw pads might be better left to the skin).

Very impressive! I couldn't create that and I've been designing for years xD.

Thanks a lot guys! :o
I'm so excited to get into 3D modelling; coming from 2D art, this really feels like giving life to something.

Do you mean like this? I've been turning them on occasionally. Excuse the not-finished hindquarters.

I might do a fanaloka, falanouc or a linsang as my next mesh. I don't think I should try something that hasn't been done before, because most things I like HAVE been done before :)
