Have you ever met someone you know online IRL?

I'm kind of curious if people on here have met someone they know online in person, and if they have any advice for meeting someone from the internet in person. The person doesn't necessarily have to be from this site or the ZT2 community, and apps like Tinder, Instagram, Kik, Steam, etc count as well.

Within the ZT2 community I met Susan last October and I'm meeting Franco next month. I may also be meeting a couple other people soon too but I'm not certain if it'll happen.

Other than that, technically I met my boyfriend and most of my college friends through our uni's Facebook page but I don't really count that since none of us had extended online interaction before actually meeting in person. In the case of my boyfriend he sent me a random message on Facebook asking if I'd ever visited a costume shop near us since we both mentioned liking to cosplay on the page xD

The best advice I have if you plan on meeting someone you know through the internet is to make sure that they're really who they say they are and to be smart about meeting them. Arrange to meet in a public place that's convenient for both people, it's safer than meeting in a private location like a house or something. Skype or FaceTime with them beforehand or at the very least have them send you a selfie or other photo to verify their identity and give you an idea of what they look like.

I met my boyfriend in an online game (a MMO similar to WoW), and we met IRL about 6 months later, I travelled to Mexico from Chile. We've been together for over 3 years.

TBH I wouldn't meet with just anyone (I'm not really good with people either) but there is a point where you talk enough to trust eachother. Lies fall apart pretty easily, also meeting someone at a game is different than for example meeting someone in Tinder that's made for meeting people. It's pretty unlikely that someone from say the ZT2 community will be lying about their identity expecting to meet people that way.

Also definitely Skype or do some other sort of videocalling first. If you agree to meet someone you haven't seen in video then you're practically asking for trouble.

Many years ago when I was in my final year of primary school I got a PM from a user on a Dutch ZT2 forum. He asked if I'd go to ... highschool, class... in... the next year. It turned out he had recognized my username from the students list and lived about 10 minutes away from my house. We were in the same class for 6 years and have been best friends since the first day we started high school. We study at different universities now but we still talk a lot on WhatsApp and meet each other at least once a month :)

Never met any one online. No one I know lives near Edinburgh. My only online friends are from the USA, Germany, Denmark and Canada.

No good hero is a one-trick phony.

I have a few Facebook friends from Tumblr and one from an old ZT2 forum. Never got further than a phone call though, they all live far away...

I sit here lonely, 5280 feet above everyone else and nobody visits me. Though I do have plans to meet Fireplume this summer in Omaha.

Yes I met several people in real life. Back in the ''golden age'' of Zoo Tycoon (like 8 years) ago, there was a very active Dutch forum and we had several meetings per year.

I also had a meeting with my buddy Ruben and we became Dolfinarium-buddies xD.

I met my current boyfriend online, on DeviantART of all places. He lives in Florida, I live in the Netherlands. We got to know each other better through tumblr and after 6 years of online interaction, first met last summer when he came here! It clicked immediately and I went to visit him at Christmas too. America is crazy.

Before we even had a thought of meeting we made sure to call and video call plenty. I talked to his parents, he talked to mine, we made sure neither of us was secretly a catfish. :P

I also met an online pal from England a while back. Also a fun experience. Took the same precautions, but her parents came with her so that helped.

Planning to meet a friend in New Jersey somewhere down the line as well.

Traveling is fun. Jetlags ain't.

So yeah, I've talked about this a bit in other areas but meeting up with Franco was a really amazing experience. He stayed in Chicago with me for around a week and we also ended up traveling out of state to meet up with a couple other friends from the community, so I can now say I've met the elusive Jragonizer if any of you remember him :P I posted a picture in the Pictures of Yourself topic of the last day all four of us were together.

Franco and I really got along, I'd honestly consider him to be a very close friend now. We just spent the week hanging out and exploring the city, and I got him hooked on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He brought some Maltese food which was really really good, and I took him to some of my favorite restaurants. I also took him to a zoo for the first time in his life.

Saying goodbye was really hard, a lot harder than I was expecting but I kind of take that as a good sign, it means that what we have is real. And we'll just appreciate the time we had together more. I may actually go visit him over in Europe sometime this winter, I'm really hopeful that he and I will get to meet up then!
