I do like it better.
But as said before, you should try to merge the head with the rest a bit more.

I do like it, but as for before. Some blury things could be worked on, and the transition head / neck may use some edit as well. You have a the beginning of a double ear. Same for the legs, the transition as well.
Great work for a first project though !

I use gimp as well, I don't see the problem.
Don't rush your work, work on the details. I never made zebras so I can't advise you on the transitions, but try many many things till it looks good.

You don't need photoshop for that, many designers also use GIMP for skinning. I personally haven't used it but I'm sure it must have some tools for editing brightness and colors.
