One of the earliest relatives of dinosaurs had some features we associate today with crocodiles and alligators, a study suggests.

Many palaeontologists have wondered what the earliest dinosaur relatives looked like, as the fossil record in this time period is sparse.

Some assumed they walked on two legs, looking a bit like miniature dinosaurs.
But the newly described creature walked on four legs like a croc, the journal Nature reports.

Neato discovery, I will admit.

It's kinda weird seeing such a long neck on a quadrupedal carnivore...

... And before anyone shoves Tanystropheus in my face, you know exactly what I mean, so don't.

Bahahaha, alright, you win this round.

But IMO, it still looks weird. It's like someone took a basal theropod and gave it croc legs. Something about it just seems weird.

Also why does every pic of it show it eating a dead cynodont? Did I miss some other details?

No good hero is a one-trick phony.

...except that monitor lizards don't really walk like crocodiles, and probably not like this thing either
