I'm not slow! That's just my moe!

Whale sharks had also not been held when the game was made, and it was before the only "successful" great whites kept by Monterey.

Sperm whales and humpback whales are a LOT more iconic than goblin sharks...

Whales would be problematic just for the sheer size of the exhibit where you'd have to keep them, especially considering how aquatic animals constantly move and don't stop to switch from an animation to another like terrestrial animals.

Goblin shark, I guess it sits there as the embassador of all the crazy deep sea critters.

Yes, realism or not, these animals are iconic both IRL and in the Zoo Tycoon series, so a ZT game without them just doesn't feel the same. Though alot of beloved and popular creatures were left out of ZT2's roster(anteater, mouflon/ram/bighorn sheep/whatever, llama, spotted hyena, Japanese serow and so on). Also there was potential for foxes, rodents(besides beaver), snakes, tropical fish, arthropods, mustelids(besides sea otter, wolverine and ratel), lagomorphs, bats, insectivorans, monotremes, amphibians(purchasable and breedable, not in houses or ambient), flying birds and others, but it turned into a missed opportunity. Marine Mania had the most miserable roster in ZT2, while Extinct Animals chose quality over quantity.
As for the serval well, my zoo(the one in Sofia, Bulgaria) has it along with African lion, bengal AND Siberian tiger, jaguar, African leopard, Eurasian lynx, mountain lion/puma/cougar/whatever and black leopard/panther. Sadly we don't have caracal, snow leopard, cheetah, clouded leopard, ocelot and white tiger. However we are glad we have so many felines and don't consider them redundant. But of course, I shouldn't be comparing the real world to a videogame. :/
PS: Ok, keep the goblin shark in the game(I don't hate it), but there should also be a giant squid and sperm whale as Benthic animals(maybe also Pacific octopus, but I guess reef is more appropriate for it).

For the numer of cats: I think (big) cats are a must have for every zoo in reality. There are just some animals almost all real zoos showcase.
My local zoo isnt´really big but they have jaguars, cougars, cheetahs, pallas cats and serval (breeding pairs of all). And in the next years siberian tigers should be added. I don´t think they are reduntant.
Cats are just as popular and typical to any zoo as giraffs and zebras. I can´t think of a single german zoo without at least one cat species, most of the times there is more than one.

Another rather small zoo a few minutes by car away is the Zoo Neunkirchen. They acutally have only one cat species, but a relatively rare: a breeding pair of snow leopards. Besides this cats they have a big variety of carnivores: european brown bear, harbour seal, dhole, bush dog, northern yellow-throated marten, meerkats, raccoon and at least 10 species of bird of prey which they let fly in a show.

I really like the mixture in the game. There you have most of the zoo classics, (nowadays) rarely kept animals and never kept animals(extinct, too rare and to big like whales). So you can build a typical zoo with lion, giraffe, elephant...but also a nice prehistoric park.

I never play with extinct animals but I use uncommon animals or some which are not kept all around the world. And this thread shows that there are so many different players. I think the choose of ariginal animals isn´t that bad overall.

The one thing I agree is that the florida panther -> cougar and black panther -> leopard thing because the first aren´t a proper species.

At least the goblin shark isn't in a questionable biome, unlike the whale shark and great white, which would've made more sense to be in the pelagic biome.

When it comes to animals, in terms of variety, MM and EA are my least favourite EXPs. MM over half the animals were either Cetacea or sharks, and EA a lot of animals that were either enlarged, recycled or both enlarged and recycled versions of animals already in the game or of each other in the case of the dromaeosaurids.

It almost feels like ZT2's animal roster becomes worse and lamer with every expansion pack. Think about it: basic ZT2 and ES are the best and most balanced, AA is in the middle, while MM and EA... well, many people(including myself) have already talked about the problems. Redundancy instead of diversity, lack of quantity AND quality, scientific inaccuracies and ugly models.
On a semi-related note, I would love to see a ZT2 Pterodactylus, Ludodactylus, Tapejara, Ornithocheirus, Mastodonsaurus, Titanomyrma, Henodus, Psephoderma, Dakosaurus, Geosaurus, Mesosaurus and Tanystropheus(plus the species in Post #27).
