Source: A new study published in the journal Nature has revealed what may be the oldest known Homo sapiens remains. The new remains, found in Jebel Irhoud, Morocco, have been dated to 318 kya + or - 34k years. The Jebel Irhoud remains have some more archaic features than other early representatives of our species including the braincase shape and teeth, but their facial profile is remarkably similar to Homo sapiens. This find is also quite remarkable as it's very far from where humans have previously been thought to evolve, in East Africa. The implication here is that human evolution may have been much more spread out than previously thought.

I'm skeptical of immediately calling the Jebel Irhoud remains Homo sapiens because of the archaic features seen. I do think its possible that they may represent a transitional form or a subspecies.
