So I think it would be cool if the base game had a feature to build aviaries and reptile houses, which function as a different form of construction with their own, unique list of animals. You can only place avian birds in aviaries, and smaller reptiles and amphibians have to be in terrariums of some sort. The level of complexity of the building system goes back to your own imagination. For the base game I could up this modes list of just 12 for each.

It's quite interesting to read about species which are more common in local zoos... I figured I'd put down a few of the species/subspecies which are more common in Australian zoos I've been to:
- Giraffes: Rothschild's
- Zebras: Chapman's, Grant's
- Tigers: Sumatran, Hybrid "Bengal"
- Lions: Hybrid "African"
- Elephants: Asian Elephant - Sumatran? (I saw the only African in Australia a few years ago but it has since passed)
- Orangutans: Sumatran
- Otters: Small-clawed
- Giant Tortoises: Aldabra
- Crocodiles: Saltwater, Freshwater (never seen Nile)

For my list, I've mostly gone with staples, focusing my unusual species selections around tree-dwelling species. I'd want there to be some aviary and tank construction options available, hence why I included some swimming and climbing species, but I don't think effort on the original game would be spent on birds, reptiles or fish as I don't think it would sell as well for a base game.

Personally, I don't think aviary construction needs to be all that different to normal exhibit construction. Essentially, you could just set an exhibit's fence height and attach a roof to it, with no trees being taller than the . For birds to be included (in expansions), all that would be needed would be to animate them to use tree branches, fly to the ground, fly around the enclosure without colliding, and to land on/climb on aviary fences.
