I personally find the way humans measure intelligence in animals to be very questionable.

Thats why I corrected myself to problem solving

Has anyone else here read the book My Beloved Brontosaurus by paleontologist Brian Switek? I'm currently reading it, and so far it's a great read that I highly recommend to any paleo-fan. I've already learned about a dozen new facts and theories just from reading the first four chapters! :)

plenty of animals people would not expect rival dogs in intelligence
pigeons, game birds, even a few squamates are believed to be as smart as dogs
or rather I should say, with training have the same (if not greater in the case of pigeons) problem solving skills as dogs
*coughcough* Pigs
They are very underestimated :P

Pigs are actually underestimated, though they are unclean. They are used for so much experiments because, they are very like humans. But, there are many smart animals. Like dogs, elephants, dolphins, and various cephalopods.

Evolving creatures from earth.

Well there are ALOT of intelligent animals
Don't forget Monkeys and corvids

But every animal is special ad has its own way to survive and to do that they all need a big proporsion of intelligence IMO
