I'm planning out the first zoo for a show and tell, since I've finally built up the muster to do so. The zoo is going to be set in the deep south, namely in the parts of Louisiana where there is mainly a mixture of bottomland forest and swamp.

To this end, I've set up a "plant palette" for what foliage I plan on using in the zoo. There are a few stand-ins, such as the bur oak standing in for the white oak, but I figured I'd show the palette for an opinion check nonetheless. Keep in mind that this is just the plant selection for easy access, it's not actually gussied up to look naturalistic like it will be in the zoo proper.

Spoiler: click to toggle

I'd say it's very nice, I'd only add some underwater foliage but only if you plan on doing underwater views.

I'll try to take a picture of the foliage that i'm using around my Amazonian aquarium so get an idea. I use a lot of plants to recreate that... and actually i just created a mix of tropical foliage, not strictly the amazon :P

I'm making an African themed bird park.
And I have some questions about the cohabitations

I've got some exhibits with differents islands in them.

• The first is an island with Shoebills, White-Faced Whistling Ducks and Hamerkops.
I've saw zoos on some sites with a cohabitation between shoebills and white-faced whistling ducks, but how about hamerkops? Do you think it's a good idea or a bad idea?

• I've another exhibit wich contains three islands. I've got Marabou Storks on one island, and 'free-roaming' Pelicans in all the water around the islands. So the storks won't be chasing them in the water, but (maybe an idiot question) are the Marabou Storks fond of water? Yes but I mean, 'deep' water?

• I've got a third exhibit with an island. I'm planning on adding Ground Hornbills (Northern or Southern, it doesn't matter) but I don't know wich african bird I could be adding to the exhibit?
Some ducks or geese? Like the stork-pelican trick?

Thanks in advance! :D

I personally wouldn't make an island kind of exhibit for the marabous and the ground hornbills. I think for the marabou a large paddock with a lake will be better, since they are found in swampy areas but they are land birds. For the hornbills i think is better to make a terrestrial exhibit.

The first combination sounds great though.

Okay, thank you! :D
In fact the Hornbill exhibit is just rounded by water like commonly seen with lemur exhibits. :)

I'll change the type of the exhibits, thanks! :D

For the marabou, the exhibits contains three medium islands. How about merge them and let the water that separated them like a little lake? And the big island rounded by water?

I know I'm annoying with the water :P
A more tropical climate that I haven't felt during my holidays. xD
