I would not recommend that combo. I am doing an exhibit for malayan tapirs, sumatran rhinos, and sumatran elephants. I am going to make it look like one exhibit although it will be split up. The reason why is if the elephants become scared of anything, they may trample one of the smaller animals. If you are looking for an animal to go in the exhibit with one of these species look at the list below.

Sumatran Elephant
Animal to be kept with.Why
Greater Mouse DeerSmall, Can easily get away from larger animals
Indian PeafowlDocile
WaterfowlCan escape to the water if an angry or scared elephant is charging

Malayan Tapir
Animal to be kept withWhy
Greater Mouse DeerDocile
Bird SpeciesBirds don't bother tapirs that much
BinturongThey usually stay in the trees of the exhibit
GibbonsAre usually playful with tapirs
Common MunjacSame as Mouse Deer

Guys, I have a tropical zoo in my hands. I've shown the entrance to some people in some places, but I'm stuck - I have no idea what species or what exhibit to start with. I don't want to start with a flamingo lake, as is usual, so I am here for help. It's a tropical zoo - what species should I start with?

Maybe some sort of mouse deer or other small mammal?

macaw, lemurs, tortoises and/or red river hogs are my suggestions :)

and @BBBurns thanks so much for the advice! I didn't mean have the tapirs and elephants sharing an exhibit, but rather what species may go well with them. I think I will go for some ground birds though, Thank you very much!

Hi everyone! My computer has been broken for the past 2 weeks and it will finally be fixed tomorrow. I'm currently planning a new zoo that will include multiple large mixed species exhibits and I was wondering if these animals would be able to live peacefully together:

- white rhino, kudu, eland, impala
- indian rhino, water buffalo, axis deer, peafowl

Thanks for the reply. I was just a little nervous having rhinos with small animals like impalas and peafowl, but I guess they'll be fine together.

As long as they have enough space and room to hide they will be fine ;) It would probably be a good idea to make an area that the rhinos cant get into so the smaller creatures can get away from them for a bit if necessary.

Thank you for the suggestion. My plans are to make the exhibits massive so there should be tons of room for the smaller animals to stay away from the rhinos. I've never tried making areas that the bigger animals can't get to, but it seems like a fun challenge that I'm going to try.

I'd actually remove the elands from the rhino enclosure, unless you plan a vast open safari-like area. Eland bulls can be quite aggressive, and they migt get into fight with rhinos.

Guys is it possible (meaning realistic) to put african river otters in the same exhibit as pygmy hippos or should i make a separate exhibit for them?

I would make a separate exhibit just to be safe.

I just wrote a FS about them and read a husbandry guide about how to house this otters and it says they do well in mixed species exhibits so i will place them with the hippos.

Did it say anything about housing them with hippos?
