I looked on Wikipedia, and it said:

Quote:

According to the rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), the system that governs the scientific naming of animals, Manospondylus gigas should therefore have priority over Tyrannosaurus rex, because it was named first. However, the Fourth Edition of the ICZN, which took effect on 1 January 2000, states that "the prevailing usage must be maintained" when "the senior synonym or homonym has not been used as a valid name after 1899" and "the junior synonym or homonym has been used for a particular taxon, as its presumed valid name, in at least 25 works, published by at least 10 authors in the immediately preceding 50 years ..."

Firstly it makes reference that by original rules (up until only 13 years ago, over a century after Manospondylus was first named), Manospondylus gigas should have been the correct name, and that it was only changed very recently, likely when for the very reason of maintaining the incorrect name so as to avoid the embarrassment of admitting the wrong name had been used for so long.

I would personally maintain that at best the ICZN is changing it's own rules to fit it's own personal agenda. Manospondylus is the original name, the correct name, and going back tot he Brontosaurus name, I bet I could find at least 25 works, published by 10 different authors in the immediately preceding 50 years which refer to it as a Brontosaurus, which therefore would make Brontosaurus a correct scientific name by their own standards.

So either Brontosaurus is not correct but Manospondylus is, or Manospondylus isn't but neither is Apatosaurus. Simply because Manospondylus is a famous dinosaur doesn't mean we can have it both ways.
Ok, fair point. T.rex just has a fiercer-sounding ring to it than M.gigas. But call it whatever you like, that's just my personal preference.

Ouch, that sounds pretty bad. We don't have bible camp over here, and generally the only bible camps we end up seeing are those on the news that are completely insane (like those crazy ones that indoctrinate kids completely or which denounce everything from Harry Potter to Pokemon to Gays to Pringles)

What's a real normal one like? I'm interested since I've only been able to really find out about the most fringe ones, which I assume (and fervently hope) are very rare and frowned upon.

@CI (you don't mind me calling you that do you?) Well that I can understand, and to be honest I don't mind people who prefer to call something by another name for personal preference.

But if people are going to complain about correctness (which was really the starting point of my rant) then they should be correct themselves and use Manospondylus gigas.

OK, i can take Tyrannosaurus having some feathers on its body, i can take it possibly living in snow. But there is no way that you can convince me to use the name that has been disproven/changed long ago. T. rex is the name that everyone uses, the name that everybody knows, and the name that won't be changed. T. rex is the name it's had for years, and there's no reason to change it now. No reason. None.

He's not asking you to start calling it Manospondylus. Did you even read his post all the way through? That's just what he prefers to call it.

You know what annoys me? Getting angry about something sciency but then getting my butt handed to me by someone with more brain power than me, and then realizing my mistake and making a total moron out of my self. (For the record, i do think Tyrannosaurus was feathered, i just don't think it looked like this: Posted Image )

No, I wouldn't impose my choice of words on you, I would like the name to get the recognition it deserves from the wider scientific community and be as legitimate a name as Tyrannosaurus if not moreso, but I won't try and demand anyone changes what they call it on my account. Susan and CI both summed up my position well.

And don't worry, while I don't endorse anger over Manospondylus/Tyrannosaurus, I totally understand becoming upset when it comes to a species and a subject you're passionate about. Plus you recognized your mistake, a very mature thing which to many people either can't or refuse to do these days.

And I agree, while it was likely feathered I do not imagine that to be an accurate portrayal,

Edit: George always had a problem losing his locusts since he was blind on one side, I dunno how good his feeling was either since one once literally crawled onto his head and sat there for a long time, and he only noticed it when it jumped off to eat the greens in his bowl

It does prove that you can realize your mistakes, and that's an important thing to learn. :)

Aargh, again with the "two people posting before me" thing! xD

You know what this is like? this like the time that Battra got drunk and Monster X was watching Seinfeld and King Kong was hitting on Jirass and...Oh, I'm talking about the party at Monster Island, aren't I? Well, what annoys me? Well, OS's Platecarpus can't breed and only eats enrichment fish, which is annoying, but also when i get stuck in a time warp in TF2, which is even more annoying.

That sometimes happens with Chili and crickets... They'll crawl right onto her head and she just doesn't notice, so I flick them off in disgust. xD I used to like insects, but not they creep me out. Aren't insect-eating reptiles wonderful? :3

That reminds me. It might not be an insect, but there is this spider living behind the sink in my bathroom and I HATE it. Because every so often it might venture out, but if I try to catch or kill it, it disappears again.
