This is something that I got onto in a PM message, does anyone else get annoyed by schools teaching us a lot of subjects and topics that aren't applicable in real life?

Now electives I can understand to an extent seeming useless to some, their subjects you choose which will help with specialized jobs later on, but even in electives there's a lot of cases of them teaching you stupid things, or often things under that subject that you don't want to learn, for example I did art for a while, I wanted to learn how to draw, particularly comic style drawing, but instead I was taught Pottery, something I have little to no interest in. Or History, we were taught the history of medicine for GCSE, something I equally have no interest in, while i was actually interested in learning about ancient cultures.

Now these are annoying, but they pale in comparison to the big ones, the core subjects, English, Math and Science:

Now English I can understand for the most part, you need to be literate, you need to understand how writing and language works and you need to be able to articulate. You do not need to learn about how a certain aspect is portrayed in a literary or film work (It really takes the fun out of watching Batman Begins when you have to analyse how the theme of fear is used in every individual scene), and nor do you need to learn about Poetry, I highly doubt Poetry should be among our core subjects.

Next, Science, again a lot of it is understandable, learning how things work is important, but many of those things we learn about go into detail far beyond what we need, how Photosynthesis works for example is useful in some careers but not very many, nor is calculating how far a ping pong ball will bounce, or learning about the chemical reactions of arsenic.

And worst is Math, I have barely used most of my Science knowledge from school, and I've used a bit of my English knowledge, but Math, all I've ever used are addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions and percentages. I have never needed to explain how I got my answer, I have never needed to know Pythagorean's Theory or square roots, or Rhombus's or so on.

These core subjects should be taught, but not to the extent they are, and should instead teach these more detailed parts as electives to those who want to learn them for future careers.

You know what I never learned at school?:
How Government works
How to vote
How to apply for a loan
How to write a cover letter
How to do taxes
What taxes are
How to buy a car or house
ETC

Personally if I ever do get political office I intend to introduce a Life Skills class, focusing on very important things like that which are needed in life, and school barely teachers, rather than Pythagorean Theory

Anyone agree?

I agree. We actually have a Life Skills class in our school, but it's really dumb. All it teaches you is 'don't smoke', 'don't do drugs', 'don't drink alcohol', and maybe the only important one, 'be respectful'.

Well, in our philosophy course we learned that school's job is not to teach you all the useful stuff you listed. That is your family. What school teaches you is and should be useless.

So basically your school's idea of Life Skills is some extremely basic advice, and them telling you not to do things that by law you can do. I mean I have no problem with teaching about the health risks of Smoking or Drinking, but that's not life skills, that's basic advice, and once you're past a certain age depending on where you are you can smoke and drink all you like at least.

That being said we had a class trying to 'teach' (aka brainwash) us into all being PETA loving vegetarian hippies, so it's not like my school (well that one of them) is any better

Edit: Well that's stupid, while yes, parents should help teach these things (and kind of have to), there is no reason I can see as to why school shouldn't teach you helpful skills and knowledge for later life.

The best way to not get your heart broken, is pretending you don't have one.

One thing that irritate me is when people call me "Gay" because my voice is a little squeakier And the fact I'm double jointed so my hands can basically do anything. OH I also hang out with this one girl I like so I hang out with every girl in the school. Them when one of my friends yelled at this one kid calling me gay "PROVE IT!" And of course you know the little Grrs had to "Discuss" it privately with eachother. This school year is going to be hell to them.

Using "gay" as an insult.

It shouldn't be an insult.

It should be just a normal world. To me, gay looks like the French word "gai", which means happy.
