Well, some people of course doubt the worth, usefulness or acceptability of ANY video game of any kind. I tend to think games in which you have to build, construct, manage and possibly use planning or strategy may be helpful, or at the very least nor very harmful besides time consumption. In this I definitely include the 'Tycoon' kind of games, like Zoo Tycoon. I think that games with a 'contruction' nature have a much higher potential for being beneficial than destructive games.

I have played some more violent video games in the past. At some particularly bad point in my teens I did enjoy one of the GTA games, but that didn't last long. Ever since I've never again taken any like to game that involve destruction and shooting people. I did for a while enjoy a hunting game (Deer Hunter), but I don't think you can view such a game in the same light as GTA for example. That like too has gone away with me getting into Zoo Tycoon again.

When people say that FPS games lead to violent behaviour. When will they understand that video games aren't real life???

I'm not really sure, CyborgIguana. I do think certain violent video games can to some extent normalize and glorify violence, in particular the kind of violence that is neither justified nor licit like the violence that goes with a just war, i.e. criminal, thug and gangster violence (the Grand Theft Auto series being a prime example here). I do think violent imagery can to some extent desensitize people to violence. I also think that there a large differences between people in terms of susceptibility to such imagery and the extent of the influence of such imagery. Some people are much more sensitive to this than others.

Some people who play violent video games do have mental issues that may draw them to such games, but also make them susceptible to violent imagery and increase the likelihood of violent behavior. I think that the high degree of realism in today's video games is not necessarily always helpful. Much depends on the nature of the violent game, i.e. whether the violence is a mobster or criminal type of violence commited by scum and immoral thugs, or whether the violence is portrayed in the context of just warfare or counterterrorism. Especially in the case of criminal violence, I think realism may not necessarily be very helpful. I do believe that most people can separate reality and fiction, but I also pose that people who have 'issues' may not always.

I do not particularly like violent video games and would never advocate them and don't disagree with limiting sales of such games to adults or adding warning labels, but banning goes to far.
Certain games, perhaps. But I wouldn't extend these claims to shooting games in general the way many people do. I don't enjoy GTA or hunting games either.

I don't like violent games in general, and I do think they have a general potential for harm for a certain group of people (and as a result of that for society). However, I also think that different games and kinds of games may not have the same potential for harm. Some violent games are worse than others. But I in general do not view them positively. Not negatively enough to argue against them, let alone propose actions being taken, but not optimistically either.

More on topic:

I'm all for freedom of speech and I absolutely oppose censorship, but man, what a huge, foul, ugly, stinking , disgusting cesspool is the internet, or at least, has it become. The internet is the most disgusting backroom and the dump of our time, it seems...
