you don't know how much that happens with animals here in Italy, and even with people who should know animals better. when channel catfish first appeared here, they were called african catfish because of the similarities between the words clarius and channel i believe. then they became the Pisa catfish (first area they were found in). then people realized they were from USA, so now they are called american catfish, while the black bullhead catfish has become the native catfish (wut ? it's american too, just introduced a lot earlier). and now the blue catfish is said to be just a different colour morphs. and it's not like they don't have an italian name (spotted catfish) ... my internet not working Edited by Furka, Jun 8 2013, 07:39 PM.

On the (off)topic of animal misidentification, I was at the zoo a few weeks ago. They had emus. There was a family watching the emus. Their dialogue went like this: Young son: Mommy, what's that? Mom: That's an ostrich. Young son: Wow! Dad: Honey, I think that is a peacock. Mom: Are you sure? Dad: Yeah. Young son: Hello peacock! and they left.... there was a sign explaining about emus RIGHT next to them. I couldn't believe they were serious. An ostrich, fine. But how on Earth can ANYONE mistake an emu for a peacock?!? *oh, and to stay on topic it annoyed me.* |

XD We went to the Detroit Zoo a few weeks ago and something similar happened in the underwater tunnel that cuts through the Polar Bear and seal tanks. A common seal with some serious spots swims over the tunnel and everyone oohs and ahhs, snaps pictures, etc. Obnoxious High School Kid: Yeah, cool. That's a Leopard Seal, babe. His Girlfriend: Wow! That's, like, so awesome! I just looked and Andy and laughed. If there were a Leopard Seal in that tank, there would be no other seals left, and they look nothing like Harbor Seals. Also... there is a list of what species are kept in the seal exhibit and Leopard Seal ain't on it. But whatevs. I didn't want to school him in front of his girlfriend. XD |

There is only one leopard seal in captivity anywhere in the world, anyway. And he lives in Australia. Some people... but to each their own, I guess. I can't tell one car from another, so who am I to talk. Edited by Sheather, Jun 9 2013, 02:34 AM.

Yeaaaah, but part of going to the zoo is learning about the creatures you're oohing and ahhing over. If he had been like "I think that's a Leopard Seal," it probably wouldn't have been as funny (to me). Instead he was clearly trying to sound like he knew what he was talking about whilst bragging to his girl and his buddies. When I don't know something, I say "I don't know." It seriously bothered me when we went through the Reptile House and some dumb broad was like "Ew, just kill them! Ew, ew!" while walking past the snake terrarium windows. What annoys you doesn't necessarily have to be fair.
