I've known plenty of people who fed their fish mice, is there a difference?

Gun rights activists. God damnit people, even the Liberals support gun ownership. That law was designed regarding MUSKETS, so yeah, if you wanna own a musket, be my guest, but put that rifle down, and join the rest of the civilized world.

I get ownership, but there should still be stricter policies in place to acquire a gun

I get annoyed by anti-gun people. Guns don't kill people, crazy psychopaths with guns do. I get that people want to end gun violence, doesn't everyone, but banning firearms is not the answer. First of all, it's the Second Amendment and a basic right to all Americans. And before anyone goes on a rant about how "Well back then they didn't have weapons of mass destruction, the had single-fire muskets." it's not about the actual weapons, it's about the idea and principle of having the right to defend yourself. Secondly, even if firearms were banned, it won't stop gun violence, which a lot of people don't seem to understand. A lot of people who go on shooting sprees get their guns illegally, not some gun store. If a law was passed to ban firearms, the people trying to defend themselves would be out of luck, meanwhile the psychos will continue to buy weapons from black market arms dealers, gangs, the mob, and triads. To each his own, and I'm absolutely positive that a lot of people will disagree with me here, this is just my personal opinion so please don't take offense. As far as patriotism goes, I myself picture the brave men and women fighting overseas so that we at home don't have to, I picture people like cops and firefighters who make our cities a safer place. They know that they could die any day doing their job, but they don't care. Knowing that they're doing what they do for their country and for their fellow countrymen is satisfying enough.... sorry, that's my die hard american side showing xD
Didn't feel like typing that up again, but it's from a discussion my and Star had a while back. I still stand by this.

The problem with guns is not criminals, its people accidentally shooting one another (shockingly common), and children/unstable people getting a hold of them, unlike criminals these people would otherwise not have guns available to them

I agree the "criminals have easier access to guns" argument is flawed

it would be extremely difficult to find let alone remove every unlicensed gun in the country, but applying new regulations for new guns being sold now would still help

thats a much nicer idea of patriotism, it just isn't the same image it brings to mind for everyone
which is another thing, there is no way to define patriotism besides the rather broad "showing you love/respect for your nation"

It seems to me people don't understand that guns aren't the problem. Put a gun out on your front porch for an hour and let it sit. It ain't gonna kill anyone, granted. People just blame guns because it's easier. The real problem, just as it always has been, is how easy it is for mentally unstable, or just bad people in general to obtain weapons. So instead of banning guns, a better solution would to place stricter regulations, not just ban the all! If we ban guns, we may as well ban the following, as they can hurt people too, if an mentally unstable person/lunatic gets hold of one of these:

-Guns
-Knives
-Axes
-Chainsaws
-Hacksaws
-Hammers
-Forks
-Toothpicks
-Pencils
-Pens
-Paper Clips
-Baseball bats
-Hockey Sticks
-Trophies with sharp edges
-Maces
-Bowstaffs
-Bows and Arrows
-Crossbows and Bolts
-Swords
-Broad Swords
-Whips
-Shuriken

...You get the picture. The point is, a person could do damage with anyone of these objects if they wanted to.

removing guns entirely is just stupid, they have their uses
but I think a license should be needed to own one, and I think more potent varieties of them (IE machine guns) should not be available with a standard license, and of course a total limit per license, if you have more than a couple pistols or a single shotgun/rifle than you probably collect guns, in which case you can get deactivated guns to display in your cabinets or what-not

I think both extremes are unnecessary. Not changing the current gun regulations in the USA would be idiotic, but completely banning them would be equally idiotic.

There are laws that ban military grade weaponry anyways, like I said before, people just buy them of the black market or from arms dealers so they're a large part of the problem too.

some states don't unfortunately

"gun rights" as a concept is also idiotic, or at least the extremists that I've heard of who claim things like it should be illegal to destroy a gun, or that they actively decrease crime (not saying guns increase crime per-se, but they certainly don't decrease it)

but when I think of "gun activists" its probably that I'm thinking of "the PETA of gun activists"

There isn't a single state in the US that allows private citizens to own fully automatic weapons, a category under which a "machine gun" would appropriately fall. Licensing laws vary state-to-state (for example, some states require no licensing or background checks to purchase a shotgun), but there is currently no Federal law that requires licensing for gun ownership or use.

I own guns and I was trained to use them by the Baltimore City Police Department as a trainee/cadet. I have several small caliber rifles, a heavily customized AR-15, several handguns (revolvers and semi-auto pistols), and a target pistol. My housemate has a small arsenal that would make the "Ban all guns!" crowd piss themselves. He's a Check Airman (a pilot that supervises other pilots), a Federal Air Marshal, and the range master at our local shooting range.

Try and tell either of us we shouldn't be able to own the weapons we do because they're "dangerous." They're about as dangerous as the person wielding them, and the only thing I shoot with any of my firearms are paper targets at the range. I own them for the same reason that some people own a lot of nice watches, or artwork, or collectibles. I enjoy the precision machinery and the practiced skill you need to have in order to operate one with any degree of efficiency.

People on both sides of this "debate" are largely misinformed or ignorant on what should be done in terms of firearm reform and what guns are, do, who can own what, etc. Google, folks. Google is your friend.

so Duck Dynasty people should not have been allowed to own machine guns?
because I was forced to watch the show and they shot up a beaver lodge with machine guns

You know what annoys me, this debate over and over again when clearly neither side is going to convince the other
