Ramsay Snow overall annoys me.

I never said having realistic armor would make it worse, I just gave it as an example of what the movie would look like if it was as realistic as possible.

Saurons army did have ranged weapons ;)

The books do a better job explaining than the films, it takes a really huge incident before the eagles are going to intervene, and/or a personal favor for Gandalf

True, but they're giant eagles, can't they just fly really high and only swoop down at mount doom? I mean bald eagles in the real world can fly 75 miles an hour and 10,000 feet high, and we're talking giant magic eagles. Not sure how many ranged weapons could hit that.

And as for the personal favor, I think it'd be a more acceptable favor to ask "Hey could you fly this ring over to that volcano for me with these dwarfs" than "hey, can you go fight these giant bat-dragon monsters who are the mounts for Sauron's greatest servants", and as for a huge incident, ending the whole war could easily be classed a huge incident of great importance.

I know that in context it's probably meant to make sense and kinda does, it's just something that bugs me

I'd guess maybe they wanted to try and let things sort themselves out, and only realized at the end "screw it, we have no choice we need to actually help now"

their appearance at the end of the first Hobbit film makes less sense in some ways, like why not carry them all the way? maybe they have more difficulty carrying people on their backs than it looks like, but still

That first part of that is actually, despite just being a 'I guess perhaps' answer, the most solid and logical explanation for the entire thing I've ever seen on this subject.

Though you're completely right about the Hobbit thing, why did they only carry them a short way and not to the mountain (which was in sight)? And doubly, why leave them on top of that random rock in the middle of nowhere which probably hampered them since it looked like it'd be nearly impossible to get down

The other thing with the eagles I don't get (this is still on topic since I'm complaining about something lol) is what's with that random moth that follows them?

I understood it showing up when Gandalf was at Isengard, he caught it and spoke to it, and somewhat again when it showed up at the Battle at the Black Gate since it was now working with the Eagles and they probably asked it to go to him.

But how in the mother of all **** did it show up in the Hobbit? If it already was with them and knew him, why did Gandalf have to ask it to go get the Eagles in Fellowship? And if it didn't know them then, why did it show up in the past during The Hobbit? And is it the same one? It looked the same, so either it's really long lived or they have multiple random moths delivering messages. Unless it wasn't a moth at all in which case what is it and still the same continuity snarl above applies

I don't actually remember it being in the books (its been years since I read them)
could be Gandalf has some magic power to mind control moths xD

Maybe it wasn't in the books and is just a movie plothole (like how Umbridge broke into the room of requirement in Harry Potter, wasn't in the books and made no sense in the movies)

Though if it's mind controlling moths, how come they came to him not the other way round

and the way Gandalf responded to them proves that they aren't just something he conjured up

The Eagles and everything around them in Lord of the Rings really do feel like some of the most confusing and annoying things to try and work out in continuity, especially since it's hard to ask experts since Lord of the Rings/Tolkien fans are some of the most rabid I've ever met.

ON the subject of complaining, I hate how I have to creep around as best I can and still often wake my parents up when they're asleep, but when I'm asleep they stomp around like a herd of elephants. I can't complain too much though given my sleep pattern's weird

In the book (again) it's explained that the eagles leave them there because they didn't want to get close to human settlements. Because you might be a giant magical eagle, but arrows still hurt.
