De "Zwartepietendiscussie"

In the Netherlands we have a national celebration called "Sinterklaas". Sinterklaas is an old man with a beard who arrives late mid-November on a steamer from Spain and hands out presents to children until it is the fifth of December and he leaves again. At night he rides a horse on the roofs and climbs through chimneys to deliver presents at homes. Santa Claus is based on Sinterklaas. But Sinterklaas has a helper, who is called "Zwarte Piet" (Black Pete), a man with a dark skin.

Recent years people started having discussions about Black Pete. Some people think Black Pete is a nod to slavery, and it would provoke discrimiation, and that it should be abolished. The people who are in favour of Black Pete say that Sinterklaas is a Dutch tradition and that children like it, so it should remain as it is.

But last year and this year the discussion about Black Pete was fiercer than ever and a majority of the Dutch population is still in favour of Black Pete. People who oppose Black Pete are receiving death threats. Shops who don't display Black Pete in their commercials are being boycotted. A far right political party has proposed a law that prohibits adaptations of traditional Sinterklaas songs and a prohibition of a different skin colour for Black Pete. (Luckily this proposal didn't get enough votes).

Television programmes and media involving Sinterklaas usually try to find a compromise, like multicolour/rainbow Pete, or Soot Pete (his face is black because he climbs through chimneys), but every compromise and alternative is turned down.

Personally I try to avoid the entire discussion. I am not against Black Pete, but I can imagine that people think Black Pete is offending and I would not mind if Black Pete is abolished or adapted.

Seriously, there are more urgent problems in the world, like terrorism and environmental problems. And in the Netherlands we are fighting about some children's celebration.

Today, shopping at the mall.

Some spoiled brat starts screaming at his mother for not buying him what he demanded.

Instead of ignoring the annoying little shit, she decides to buy him something else.

Commence JP raptor screech on behalf of the kid.

Ugh.

Really? I understand the Rated R thing but violent videogames make children violent?! Studies have shown the more children play violent videogames the less violence there was because people use violent videogames to get rid of frustration. At least people know media violence is fake and not real. People have different reactions between actual violence and media violence (ex: real shootings and call of duty).

I've played several violent videogames and I compared it to real life.
Real life is a hellalot more violent than videogames... :catz:

I'm not slow! That's just my moe!

The only slight merit to the argument is that violent media desensitizes people to violence
but desensitization doesn't make people violent, just less affected by it emotionally

And that impressionable kids that are like under 7 shouldn't be playing games like GTA which are more than just violent. Other than that, it's pretty much bs.

Would you look at me? I'm setting records.

When everyone and even you know when a girl has feelings for you but she denies it, later gets a boyfriend and then treats you like shit for whatever reason.

But it's entertaining when you meet some eight year old over online gaming that thinks they're cool for cursing you out over something really not worth the fuss. But I agree we'd be better off without that influence. And too much of it annoys me, to stay on topic. xD

(In reply to the violent video game discussion above. :P)

That's why they are rated for a certain age. If parents buy their kids a game which is supposed to be for older audience, that's another problem.

Not to mention GTA and COD are those which get the most attention, and yet they aren't as epic violent as many other games.

Stabbing yourself under your fingernail with a piece of bread.
Or a cereal flake. :(

I am utterly annoyed by the fact that I was doing maths so fast that all of a sudden the entire pen's tip got dissected from the pen. I feel like a pen killer (sounds much like pain killer xD ) xD
