Ok I'll give you the transport but let's talk about probably the most important part of Australia from a Tourist perspective... beaches. Bondi, Manly, Cronulla? Yeah we have em' all 100+ to be exact and as you said, the weather for it. Your beaches are pretty much frozen solid during the winter (not literally) and we have the better festivals. Vivid, Mardi Gras, Sydney festival and of course our New Years is one of the best in the world. Why do you think we got the Olympics in 2000? Food is hard to judge. See I would agree that the food was better in Melbourne. We have so much more all-day breakfast options (irrelevant). However Sydney has really improved over the years and many articles have said its surpassed Melbourne. That would explain why we have so many more two-hatted and three-hatted restaurants. 4 Three-hatted in Sydney > 1 Three-hatted in Melbourne 25 Two-hatted in Sydney > 15 Two-hatted in Melbourne We are just more critically acclaimed. Also don't talk about sports. Your state watches the gayfl whilst Sydney and Brisbane verse it out in State Of Origin. I don't understand why your pansy players don't take part in such a big event in Australia but hey, you're the one claiming sports is way better in Melbourne. (Again, we had the Olympics) Edited by Phoenix Fox, Sep 15 2017, 05:54 PM.

That is just a list, doesn't mean it is better... also you can see that it took in the cities and Australia parts and showed you the Australian cities, not the best to worst. @magpiealamode What are you saying...

Perhaps in terms of attracting tourists, but what makes a city great is the quality of LIVING, not simply tourism. Melbourne is a better city for living, and has been ranked as the World's Most Liveable city seven times in a row. Sydney admittedly is always high up in the rankings, but has slipped in and out of the top ten. Sydney has some nice extremely all-year-round over-crowded beaches, but Queensland's beaches are still much much better. If tourists wanted to come to Australia for beaches specifically, it'd be a laughable choice to pick Sydney when you could go further north for less-crowded, more natural beaches. Melbourne's beaches may not be quite as good over winter because of the weather, but they're still lovely over summer and offer a much more wild experience if you go just a little out from the city. 100+ beaches is also not necessarily an impressive number - Melbourne hosts . Some of the noteables include St Kilda and Brighton Beach (those beaches with the iconic bathing boxes on the sides - probably more iconic than Sydney's beaches even if less visited). Oh yeah, and as I mentioned before, Melbourne lies on the east end of one of the most rugged and beautiful coastlines in the country, if not the world in the Great Ocean Road. I'm just saying 'Sydney has them all' is definitely not completely accurate. Beaches - I know which I'd rather be at... As for festivals, admittedly I don't care much for them, but Melbourne does have quite a number of music and arts festivals... oh yeah and the Moomba festival which is Australia's largest free community festival. The Melbourne Show and Melbourne Festival also rival Sydney's festivals in attendance. You guys do have nice New Years celebrations because of that one really fancy bridge, but attendance-wise we still both get pretty much the same: 1.5 million... So for all the tourism and fancy firework displays, you're not THAT much better. Olympics? Oh yeah that's okay, we only had them in 1956, 44 years before you so I'm glad you guys got your chance. Melbourne is still easily the sporting capital, holding the majority of Australia's annual sports events: the Australian Open, Melbourne Cup and Spring Racing Carnival, the Australian F1 Grand Prix, AFL Grand Final and Boxing Day test matches... all very big events in their respective sports. The MCG is also the largest sports stadium in Australia, 10th in the world, seating over 100,000 people and achieving full capacity in some events. Also, we have had international recognition as the sports capital of the world in some recent years, even with your big fancy Olympic Park. State of Origin is a big event, but playing rugby league does not make you the sports capital. Australian Rules Football is the most watched and attended sport in Australia and is an older code than rugby league, union, American football and soccer. It is also fair to say that because we invented a sport of our own, we do have more claim to the title of sporting capital. Also, calling AFL 'gayfl' is a really sad attempt at an insult (dare I say homophobic), and it certainly is no pansy sport. Rugby is tough but Aussie Rules footy is a far more athletic sport, requiring a larger range of skills and it is, by no means, a 'pansy' sport. Tackles, bumps and shoves are common and occur in all directions (running back with the flight of a footy is one of the most courageous acts in sport you could ever see), while rugby is more or less one-directional. The difference is mainly that AFL is strict on protecting the head and legs, but this isn't because players are 'pansies', it's because sports leagues can get into serious legal trouble when players suffer brain problems following their careers. No one, even the bravest athletes, would want to lose brain functionality later in life over sport. AFL simply attempts to minimise the risk. As for food, Melbourne's food scene is more than restaurants. As you pointed out, Melbourne WAS better, but this is because Melbourne comes up with the ideas in the food industry. We have such a vibrant food and cafe culture that Sydney will only ever get close to from copying and pandering to its tourist base - in other words, it won't get close to Melbourne. Melburnians tend to eat out more and everyone has their favourite cafe or restaurant here - it's just such an integral part of our culture. The three-hatted/two-hatted argument says nothing about the food culture given that those restaurants are focused on wealthy overseas customers and Sydney also has a slightly larger population. You can find good food relatively cheaply in Melbourne so easily and the atmosphere of our cafes are amazing. Overall, Sydney is the 'grand', tourism-focused city, while Melbourne is the relaxed, hipster and artsy city. They're both good but I'd never feel at home in Sydney. |

A wisent has been spotted in Germany. The first time in 250 years! Unfortunately the local authorities shot it because they weren't sure if it was a danger for humans. They thought the wisent could have escaped from captivity and therefore wouldn't be afraid of humans. But there are some hints that the wisent was wild and came from Poland... I really can't understand why the authorities shot the animal. There wasn't any specific problem. No one was in danger... But it shows that German authorities don't know what to do with large, wild animals that were extinct here. The same happened years ago with a brown bear... Nevertheless, I'm happy that wisents are apparently coming back! Same for moose. There is an increasing amount of sightings. This year even calves have been seen. They probably are the first wild moose born in Germany in a very long time! Edited by Jony, Sep 16 2017, 05:42 PM.

Can you guys stop with the Australian city battles? The Telegraph's list of the top 50 cities in the world, #1-5 goes like this: #1 - Cape Town #2 - Vancouver (CANADA) #3 - Venice #4 - Sydney #5 - Tokyo with Melbourne at #17. So stop. Please. The unbiased Brits who wrote the list know better than a couple of extremely biased Australians. (The list) Edited by Viggen, Sep 16 2017, 07:57 PM.
