That is sadly a problem with a lot of anglers, they only care about their own interest and fun and hate anything else that interferes with it. Be at least glad that someone is trying to improve your rivers (otters being a very good sign), here authorities pretty much don't care about them and so we are overrun with issues ranging from pollution, dams, excessive removal of water for crops and last but not least a massive case of poaching from East-European countries (with the authors pretty much going unpunished unless the locals get mad at them). Soon enough we'll have to be glad if there'll be any fish in our waters, native or not. Edited by Furka, Nov 17 2017, 11:11 AM.

Yes it is very sad indeed and I would suspect that there is a very high casualty rate amongst otters on lakes around here dedicated to carp fishing and fish farms. They are riddled with traps which people claim are for catching american minks which is very rare around here following several years of eradication efforts. There is few pristine rivers left around here anymore and there is also the problem of directing water for agricultural use. There was plans to re-introduce beavers in this area a few years ago I was told but those plans were quickly abandoned due to protests from the local community. |

I've never heard of an otter managing to get into a fish farm, what kind of shoddy operations are these people running? Let alone for carp, hell carp can even be raised in vats, hard to imagine anything going wrong short of human error unless they're just being kept in by nets some idiot stuck in the middle of an open river. |

Perhaps fish farms there aren't as predator-safe due to the absence of predator until recent times, therefore the owners didn't need to put up defensive measures that would have only been a waste of money. Sorta the issue we are having with wolves here, farmers are used to keep their sheeps free roaming with no supervision because there was nothing to worry about until wolves returned (except thieves). |

Hey everyone! So a certain somebody was really nice and decided to warn me of this: https://strawpoll.com/wxfe9b7a Now I won't name them but I would like to thank them for sharing this to me. I find it really childish that our staff go behind peoples backs and make things like this. However, I think that we should make this vote public! I mean, what democracy would this be if only staff got to vote? So go ahead, everyone vote! Yes or No, I don't care. As long as everyone has a free vote of this. I don't know who instigated this (although I have my predictions) but I'm pretty disappointed in them although I'm sure they could care less. I guess their actions are pretty fishy, Furka and stargatedalek! |

I'm not even staff, how the hell would I be involved with this? I don't recall Furka ever getting involved either, not sure why you're singling either of us out here. I'm not so sure, here we have fish eating birds of prey, crows, loons, merganser, and herons even inland but it's never been a serious concern. Most of the farms here are artificially built trout farms, they grow them in giant concrete moats and I've never seen one with any more than chain-link fences to keep thieves out. Birds can fly right in but the fish are either in dense enough quantity or the birds are few enough that it's not an issue. One of the larger farms even has merganser visit them frequently enough that they make a small event of it when they see them, they have a display in their visitors center about them and everything. Perhaps the differences are largely regulatory? Or perhaps it's moreso the type of business? Fish farms here are big business, they employ a lot of people and raise thousands of fish at any given time. For a farm here loosing a dozen fish a month to predators is nothing, they loose five times that to happenstance, but for someone farming fish in a glorified backyard pond a dozen fish a month might seem like a lot. Most of the farms here being trout farms they also do a lot of environmental outreach and release and rely heavily on that give and take and the associated goodwill with the government and environmental groups etc. for supplies, educational programs, and eggs. I've never heard of freshwater fish farms actually being built in a pre-existing waterway, there's certainly no need for it, and it only creates more risk for all parties involved. Disease, invasive species, and natural predation are only going to be worse in that sort of set-up. |

No, I was referring to you two to make my pun work. You were both talking about fish farms so I used your names to keep my pun relevant. I understand how that would be confusing tho |

Hate to burst ya bubble here pal, but theres been many times that I've made confusing posts, and this one is no different. Doing these references ... well ... they really aren't the best thing to post about. Most people on the internet will not understand what these mean. I've been there before, and on my behalf, I recommend you just try to avoid this and keep on point with what you are trying to say. It'll save ya the stress
