I got some really, really good news today... I recently ran my credit report and found a debt (already in collections) issued by my alma mater for over $10,000. Needless to say, I was shocked as (1) I graduated in 2007; and (2) My parents paid the tuition not covered by financial aid (which I repay) and a few scholarships/grants I was awarded, and they would NEVER allow a bill to lapse like that.

So I called Enrollment Services and asked what was up. They stated that their records had shown I enrolled in Grad School classes for Winter 2008 (I had done no such thing). So I was told to write a petition letter to their office explaining that I had not enrolled and that the enrollment status needed to be changed (and thus, my outstanding bill would be zero'd out). I did so, and within a few weeks, my enrollment status was changed. Yay.

Then... I received a letter from the Bursar's Office stating that while my enrollment status had indeed changed, in order to refund/cancel the tuition fees, I needed to notify their office within 30 days of initial enrollment. Y'know, back in 2000-and-frickin'-8. I was really annoyed at this point and called their office to (once again) explain that this was all done in error and that I had no idea about until recently.

I had to write *another* petition letter to *their* office, and that got taken up the chain to the VP of Financial Services (after passing through the Director of the Bursar's Office and the University Comptroller).

Weeks went by and I heard NOTHING. So last week I called again and asked if anything had been decided... at that point, even if they stuck by their decision to bill me, I wanted to know. I was told that they would inform me within the week.

... And today, I got a letter in the mail saying the account will be adjusted to show a '0' balance, and the collection agency will be contacted and will remove the debt from my credit report (thank God!). It's *almost* like having won 10 grand seeing as I now no longer owe it to my school. What a relief!
