I have to admit - I don't like the Hunger games at all xD

I am just relaxing at home eating lunch. I had a crazy weekend of shopping and getting ready for the baby. I still have to pack my bags for the hospital. I'm just too lazy and burned out. There is still so much to do.

I don't dislike the hunger games, but I don't get all the fuss, after all its essentially a glorified Battle Royale knock-off...

TBH things that are excessively popular have a habit of annoying me. THG is no exception.

They have one or two things in common..... that doesn't make it a ripoff. Battle Royale has contestants that are all from the same high school class, Peeta and Katniss only ever met one time before the games, and even then they didn't talk to each other. In the Hunger Games, the whole thing is televised for the entire nation to see, in Battle Royale no one even knows about it until after it's over. Battle Royale also has a ton more violence than THG. The characters in THG are also much more well-developed than Battle Royale, even if that's just because the movie version portray's the characters poorly (Of which I'm not sure). The two have more differences than similarities, hell based on that idea, I could sit here and say Battle Royale was a ripoff of The Running Man, or even Lord of the Flies.

"essentially" ergo not literally, in fact the initial comparison was primarily intended to be humorous

the THG books were a lot more violent than the films (the books were on par with battle royale), I was really disappointed that the film was so tame in that regard, but alas, target audience

as for "character depth" I disagree
heres a few things that are probably making you biased;

-the language
I'm assuming you aren't fluent in Japanese (I wouldn't say I'm fluent by any means, but I know a little and have an interest to understand more of the language), and dubs tend to be bad in general

-you are comparing a movie to an entire franchise
I'm assuming you've never read Battle Royale, thus you are comparing a single movie to the entire THG franchise as a whole, which isn't really a fair comparison

-the gore
I'm guessing from your previous comment you aren't fond of it, understandable (its not like I didn't cringe more than a few times in battle royale), but the target audience varies, THG films were intended to be as family friendly as possible, whereas battle royale is intended for a more mature audience

Let me tell you this, I have absolutely no problem with gore. I'm the guy who watched both Human Centipede movies back to back just because someone dared me to, remember? And you're right, I don't speak fluent Japanese, actually I don't speak any, which is what I mentioned when talking about the character depth. I'm sure that the characters aren't as deep as they are in the books, which I haven't read, and in the movie, which I have seen, they probably don't seem as deep because of it being a movie adaptation and the fact that I watched it with subs. Also, I was comparing one movie (THG) to one movie (Battle Royale). I'm not comparing Battle Royale to the whole franchise, which isn't fair for THG, I'm literally just comparing the first book with Battle Royale. However, if you wanted to compare the franchise with the movie, I would say there is no way in hell that THG can be a ripoff considering THG ends in a full scale revolution. Oh, and did I mention the fact that THG has giant mutant wasps, dogs and lizards? Personally, I'm not even that big of a fan of THG, at least not the movies, but I see don't see how you can call THG a ripoff when there are so many different concepts and events. THG has more in common with the Roman Colosseum than Battle Royale.

Again in, I meant the basic concept of 'government makes kids fight to the death', not the plot, and I was primarily trying to be humorous

even trying not to, after having seen/read the rest of the THG it will affect your comparison to an extent

Zebrasorus is teh best evur11

I just finished watching American Ninja Warrior, America vs. the World. I was rather unimpressed by the Japanese, who didn't win a single challenge, though overall, they completed the 3rd stage more than anyone else, just not fast enough. It ended up very close between USA and Europe with Europe winning by like .3 seconds in the end. It wasn't all that fair though, because 2 out of their 4 victories were won by a Canadian, who just moved to France to train in rock climbing, but overall, it was very fun to watch. Anyone else watch ANW or Sasuke here? Its one of my favorite shows.
