I LOVE German shepards, welcome to the club! But hey, if it's a male, don't name him Kaiser, that's sooo overused. One of my dogs is named Bismarck

How many people are actually aware of the origin of the word Kaiser? I think it's quite an interesting one

...How could you not know that it's the German word for emperor, derived from the Latin cognomen 'Caesar', which sounds almost exactly the same as Kaiser. |

Well, surprisingly enough, some people seem to think that history is, dare I say it, boring

I actually didn't know that... We've never really studied Germany at my school other than the World Wars. I think we're about to learn about ancient Germany though. My dog's name is Cleo. Which makes sense with her being a Pharoah Hound (pitbull mix.) |

I blame bad lessons and a focus on extremely limited parts of history when it's taught. Try learning 'The History of Medicine' for years from an exceptionally boring teacher and you'll understand my distaste at least. Only upside to that class was we relatively often got to just watch Blackadder |

And also Czar ![]() Also, Germany's history is so much more than the World Wars. Teutoburg is kinda overrated, but the HRE was definitively a huge player in the middle ages. Also the Thirty Years War, Frederick the Great, Prussia, what's not to love? |

Come to think of it, at my school we haven't really learned any European history other than the British colonization from American history and Spain from Texas history class. We're going to learn more very soon in my ancient civilizations class as we've just finished the Roman, Greek and Russian civilizations. Texas history is pretty interesting though. Always thought it was funny/weird how the US education focuses so much on US history, which is at most 500 years ago. Europe's history 'started' 3000 years ago, the Middle and Far Eastern history even earlier. That said, I've got to admit that our history education left a lot of blanks too. Mughal? Timur Lenk? Dissolve of the Mongol Empire? Japan before contact with early discoverers? Start of the Russian Empire? Indonesia in the Middle Ages? Never mentioned in history class. |

True. Most, if not all, of our social studies classes during elementary school focus on our own country. Sixth grade focuses on the ancient, ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia. Seventh grade moves onto the Greeks, Romans, Chinese then the middle ages and finally ends with exploration of the new world. Eighth grade is the first American colonies up to the American Civil/Rebuilding and covers just about everything in between that happens on the American Continent. Once you get to high school it's pretty much up to you what classes you take. |
