They are mostly arboreal, which means they spend most of the day high above the ground, though they can also be found on the ground every now and then. Most Tamarins are diurnal, so they are active during the day and sleep at night. The only South-American nocturnal (active during the night, sleeping during the day) is the Owl Monkey. The dense tropical rainforests in America are home to the biggest diversity of species in the world, under which the Emperor Tamarin. ![]() Location of the Emperor Tamarin [anchor]beh[/anchor]Behavior Emperor Tamarins are very graceful, friendly, and playful monkeys. They make high pitched trilling and staccato calls, some of which are inaudible to the human ear. Other than calling, they also communicate with eyelids, ears and hair erection. Emperor Tamarins move through trees with quick jumps. They climb up to the jungle canopy and watch for danger from above. Emperor tamarins have often been seen living with other species of Tamarin. Mutual grooming plays an important role for bonding and socializing. [anchor]lif[/anchor]Life Emperor Tamarins live in small family groups with 3-8 members. The oldest female stands the highest in the hierarchy, under her are several younger males. Female Emperor Tamarins are able to mate for 15 days, and they mate with every male in the group. The gestation period lasts about 140 days, after which 1-2 youngs are born. A newborn Emperor Tamarin weighs about 35 grams or 1.2 ounches, and has a coat of short hair. The female Emperor Tamarin feeds her baby every 2 hours, and then she returns the baby to the father. Baby Emperor Tamarins ride on the backs of their parents for 7 weeks. Most of the time Emperor Tamarins become sexually mature around 16-20 months. Their life span is between 10 and 20 years.
