As some of you may have noticed, a new speculative evolution team has bloomed ! Terra Futura presents its first animal, a teaser for what is to come later ! ![]() This is an artist's interpretation of the Giant Eagle Gull, drawn with the few information our reporters managed to find from Future Earth. It shows some innacuracies. Aquilolarus major Order: Speleolariformes Family: Aquilolaridae Genus Aquilolarus. Description: The first thing you may notice about the Giant Eagle Gull is its size - a little bit larger than an Andean condor, with a maximum wingspan of 3.6 meters (12 feet), making it one of the largest flying birds ever. However, their normal size would be 3-3.3 meters (10-11 feet). Their beak is massive and strongly hooked, yellow with a red spot on the lower mandible. The eyes are large and adapted to night-seeing. The overall plumage is white, with silver wings, a silvery back and black wingtips. The feet are not webbed and yellow The males have a small crest on the head. ![]() Behavior: Giant Eagle Gulls are mostly gliders, though they prefer to stay near to the coast, while some populations are frankly terrestrial. They live in solitary or in couples, but never in large groups, except for large sources of food. ![]() A male Giant Eagle Gull tightens its iron-like grip on an unfortunate Blind Trout (Parasalmo albino). Hunting and Diet: Their diet varies greatly, depending of the population. Coastal populations feed mainly on fish and inner ones on amphibians and reptiles found in the caves. All of them eat carrion, they gather in large groups when big animals wash up on the shores. Their hunting method is very similar to that of a fish eagle. They swoop down on their prey, let themselves fall and unfold their wings at the last moment, catching the prey in their un-webbed feet while it is pierced by the fourth digit. Reproduction and life cycle: Giant Eagle Gulls live up to 30 years, and most of the ones reaching adulthood live up to that age, as they have no predators and have no real trouble finding food. Mating occurs the whole year : there are no seasons in the caves. The male starts showing his crest and bringing prey. If the females wants to mate, she will eat it, and copulation occurs. Both animals build a nest with whatever is available, and the females lays 2-5 eggs she will brood while the male hunts. If there is not enough food, the parents or the strongest/oldest chicks will slay the younger ones - this is known as cainism. Raising takes around six months. Taxonomy and evolution: Giant Eagle Gulls come from the silvery gull (Larus argentatus), like all Speleolariformes. They evolved to fill an empty niche in the Sunless Sea : that of main predator. ![]() Credits

Seagulls here are very shy and adorable. That's probably because they are just the winter visiters... |
