(Sorry for doublepost) Yet another reveal, an early one, at that, and obviously a personal favorite of mine. Ladies and gentlemen, the Morten! ![]() Morten Felimelis callidus Order: Carnivora Family: Mustelidae Genus: Felimelis Species: callidus ![]() A female morten descends from a tree. Description: The morten, Felimelis callidus, is a solitary opportunistic predator. It resembles a fossa, save for the spots and size difference. It can grow slightly smaller than a mountain lion, and is known to predate on animals similar to the prey it takes, as well as a little more. ![]() In comparison to a 6-foot tall man. Behavior: Mortens are solitary animals. They have a 3 dimensional territory, for they are also very adept at climbing trees, much like their ancestor. They mate once or twice a year with no fixed mating season. Males mark only few areas of their territory, for their musk's odor has a very large radius. Females are known to have larger territories than males. It is thought that it is so because they need the extra space to raise their fast-growing young. Hunting and Diet: Mortens prey upon just about anything, but they prefer game around half their size. Their hunting style is similar to a leopard's, often jumping from a branch onto prey, and then dragging it up another tree once the animal has been dispatched. Reproduction and Life Cycle: Mortens mate once or twice a year. The female will wander into a male's territory to mate. They spend the bulk of their gestation period in the male's territory, with the male occasionally sharing part of a kill. Once the kits have reached a certain size in the womb, the female will become very aggressive and return to her large territory, viciously defending it even after the cubs are born. This period of hostility ends once the cubs have left to fend for themselves. Taxonomy and Evolution: The tree marten, a small arboreal predator, quickly took the niche of the larger cats once their population collapsed, and continued to evolve and diversify once the cats have gone extinct. There are many species, each filling out different roles as predators, but since this is the first species discovered, it was the first ever to be plainly called the "Morten", and thus the name stuck. Others prefer to call it the Spotted Morten. ![]() A young male yawns in the foreground. Everything you see here is made by me, Tyranachu. Credits to the Terra Futura team for making all this possible. |

Another reveal arrives! Eldorado Cichlid Megaloparachromis ferox ![]() A male Eldorado Cichlid with mating colouration. Order: Perciformes Family: Cichlidae Subfamily: Pseudoparachrominae Genus: Megaloparachromis Specie: ferox Description: A very large cichlid that resemble today "Parachromis" genus very much. The adult male grows up to 3 metres (10 feet) long and list as one of the biggest freshwater fish in this period. Normally, males will have dark yellow body with a large black line running across the head to the tail, oval spots around the upper body and small dots spread everywhere. They also gave black fins and red eyes. However in breeding period, their body will turn bright gold! That's why they got this name. The fins also turn red and leave only a little black at the base of the fins. Females have a grey body with the same patterns than the male, they also grow smaller in size, about 2.5 metres (8 feet) long maximum. ![]() In comparison to a 6-foot tall man. Behavior: They are solitary predators. They most likely prefer placid, deep water with a lot of water weed to ambush for prey. They are very territorial predator, Eldorado cichlid will attack anything that big enough to get their attention as intruders. Even their own kind are not safe, if 2 fully grown cichlid encounter each other in one's territory, they fight by jaws locking like most cichlids do in the fight. The result varies from injury to death. They are also cannibals and sometimes feast on the body of the loser. When reach the full size, healthy Eldorado cichlids have no natural predators. Hunting and Diet: They eat other fish, water birds or anything that moves and is small enough to swallow. They are ambush predators that can attack with high speed in the short range, there are even some reports about this fish tackled something as big as a fuvenile Titanoconda. Their huge teeth at the size of dog's teeth make the prey unable to escape once got caught in the fish's jaws, and sometimes even kill it instantly. Reproduction and life cycle: During breeding season, male will create "nests" between the water plants and weed, by picking up and digging the plants or any covers out until they reach the sandy gravel or flat rock. Males will then court a female and once they pair up, the female will lay up to 2,000 eggs in the nest. Both parents will guard their eggs viciously. Once the fries hatch, they will move them to many different places to avoid predators. The fries will live on their own until they reach 5 inches long (12.5 cm). ![]() A pair of Eldorado Cichlid is trying to chase a King Birstle-back away from their nest not so far from there. Taxonomy and evolution: Despite looking very alike to ancient Guapotes, Eldorado Cichlids are closer to the other Genus of cichlid call Cichlasoma, which is more adaptive. Special thanks to Terra Futura team. Profile and pictures by me, spell and grammar correcting by Crookedjaw. Edited by Mathius Tyra, Jun 23 2013, 11:52 AM.
