Well with my birthday I want to give you my Terra Futura signature animal is here. This is basically just a microraptor-like woodpecker Raptopecka scandere ![]() A young reptopecka is foraging for food. Shows some accuracies but that will be explained later on. Order: Piciformes Family : Raptopeckidae Genus: Raptopecka Description: These birds climb with their small claws on the big trees, eating insects with their long tongue out of holes in trees. When they have eaten their full on that tree they glide to the next one. But they can't really fly anymore. They have wings like the ancient microraptors and have claws on them. They are blue in color with red plumes on the head and bare claws on their feet and "paws".The middle finger of each "paw" is longer to tick on the tree, pronounci,g a sound that atrracts insects. They have a long beak for eating the insects out of trees. The flight muscles have been undeveloped which means that they can only fly for very short distance and mostly glide like the anicient microraptor. ![]() A reptopecka compared to a six foot (1.80m ) tall human Behavior:These animals live in breeding pairs their whole life together and are territorial. When an intruder pair comes in their territory they fight and the winner chases the loser away. They stay in breeding pairs and dont have much contact with other groups of reptopecka. When they fight they first display their feathers and when the intruders are stil confident in invading, they start fighting with their long claws often leading to death of one of the two. Hunting and diet: They eat insects and especially larvae. They have a similar technique as tarsiers have. They tick with their claw on the tree so they feel the vibrations of insects within the tree. They crack the tree open at the places where they hear nsects and then they pick it out of the tree with their long pointy beaks and swallow the insects whole. They need to eat 300 insects a day to sustain themselves. ![]() A pair of Reptopecka is foraging for food at a large conifer tree, while a younger bird gliding away in the far distance Reproduction and lifestyle: The breeding pair digs a hole in a tree to use it as nest. The female then lays 2-6 eggs and the pair incubates both eggs for about 10 days. If the chicks hatch the parents will noth go hunting insects to feed the young. They care for the chicks for about 6 months then they are ready to leave the nest. These animals live for about 11 years in harmony. After three years They start loooking for mates. Taxonomy and evolution When the food was scarce their ancestor (the Black woodpecker) started climbing on rocks to find insects and when the trees grew back they evolved claws and used their succesful technique on the trees. ![]() The wing of a reptopecka to show it has no hands. Yes it is twisted but I couldnt get it right. Credits Spoiler: click to toggle
